Just after some clarification....my dd's teacher (at a meeting this morning) said they have to accept the first answer given, however, after googling and finding the governments guidance online it seems to me that children can self correct and it is the last answer they give that must be counted even if previously read correctly..

Can anyone offer any clarification?
Thanks

I'm sure I've seen Mrz, who knows about these things, say quite recently that yes they can self-correct. And if it's in the guidance, it must surely be the case. However, it's surprising how some schools and teachers do get these things wrong. Do you think you can tactfully say, "but i was reading the guidance, and it says..."?

The last answer is the one which is accepted. Remind your child to sound out the alien words before blending!

TeenAndTween · 03/06/2015 08:18

Could it be just a terminology thing?

i.e. That they can have as many goes saying it, but when they say it definitively and look to the teacher that is:

either 'their first answer' (the others were practicing)

or 'their final answer' (after they had tried and discounted other stuff)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 03/06/2015 10:56

The last answer is the one that's accepted. So they can self-correct if needed to.

Whilst they do need to blend the alien words to read them correctly, there's no need to do this out loud if they are past that stage. They don't need to say 'v-e-p, vep', just 'vep' will do to get the mark.

thanks. ..do you think I should say something to her teacher?

The teacher might have meant first answer, as in, their final answer. The teacher can't ask the children to have another go.

I think I've probably explained it like this, badly, to parents! Confused

But I mean that if they give me an answer they are happy with, I cannot ask them if they are sure or get them to try again.

Speak to the teacher to put your mind at rest. But I probably wouldn't word it so that you are correcting the teacher... Maybe say something like, "I'm a bit worried as DC has a few goes at reading the word before finally settling on the right answer. Is he allowed to self- correct or do you have to accept the very first answer?".

I'm sure the teacher will put your mind at rest. If not, then- oh dear! Shock

Loobylou3 · 03/06/2015 18:24

Yes, I wouldn't want to be seen as correcting the teacher but I am slightly worried about it!

"If a child shows their ability to decode by correcting an incorrect attempt, this should be marked as correct. However, children must not be prompted to ‘have another go’. If a child makes several attempts at a word the final attempt must be scored, even if this is incorrect and a previous attempt had been correct."

Thanks mrz. Any words of advice as to what might sound okay when clarifying with the teacher?

I would approach the teacher in just that way ..."I think I might have misunderstood what was said at the meeting and just want to check that the child can self correct and you will accept their final answer ..."

Hopefully you won't have to point her towards the check administrators guide.

good luck
