Bedtime for Junior school age children - Yr 3 - 6

I just wondered what time your children go to bed and get up for school during the week?

I have a DD in Yr 3 and a DS in Year 5. They are both in bed by 7.30. DS is an earlier riser and is always up by 6.30am, although he's often been up to use the toilet before that time. I have to wake DD at 7am. DS is always up early regardless of how late he goes to bed and is horrible when tired, same with DD although she will sleep late if she's up late. My ex has a real problem with their bedtimes and thinks they should be allowed to stay up until 8.30 - 9pm but I know they would be in terrible shape if this happened.

DS2 usually goes up about 8-8:30 and DS1 follows once he's sound asleep. WWIII breaks out, if he isn't.

They both wake up between 5 and 6am. DS2 has never slept for long hours, unless he's ill. DS1 actually needs more sleep but pride stops him from going to bed first.

DD, Year 3, goes to bed around 7.45pm, light out around 30 minutes later. Twice a week it is 9pm due to clubs and we see the difference.

She can go longer at a weekend if we are away but she needs then a quite day after,

Her alarm goes at 7.10 am and she is normally awake-sich, it is early as she is not a morning person, regardless when she wakes, and needs time to boot herself up.

DD1 (Yr 6) in bed at 8pm, enforced lights out 8.30pm at the latest.
DS (Yr 3) in bed at 7pm, self-regulated lights out 7.30pm.
DD2 (Yr 1) in bed at 7.30pm, self-regulated lights out 8pm.

DD1 wakes by herself about 6.30am - she is allowed to read in bed from 6.30am but no lights on before then. She is a slow starter in the morning - she needs a good hour alone before facing other human beings with grace, hence my reluctance to let her stay up later.

DS needs to be woken up at 7.30
DD2 wakes up herself around 7am.

Sometimes DD2 crows about going to bed later than her older brother. But DS acknowledges he needs his sleep and if under the weather will put himself to bed earlier. It's not a competition, we've just worked out what works for us.

DD (Year 3, 7yo) - during weekdays she is in her bedroom by 7:45pm and lights out is around 8:15pm. She is always up before 7am, usually around 6am.

DS (nursery, 4yo) - during weekdays he is in bed and asleep by 7:30pm. He is usually up by 7am, but likes his sleep much more than his DSis does!

Interestingly, DD is going on her first 5 day/4 night school residential in a couple of weeks and the plan there is for them to be up by 7am and lights out at 10:15pm, with a jam-packed day of activities in between! I anticipate picking up a very tired DD on the Friday evening...

Ds3 (8) goes to bed at 9:30/9:45. He doesn't have to be up until 7:45 but is always up before that. I have never had to wake him. He needs less sleep than me!

Mandzi34 · 21/05/2015 17:06

Thanks all for the information and advice. It seems my two need their sleep more than others. I will start letting them stay up later though and see how we go.

My 8yr old DD (Yr 3) goes to bed around 8:30pm, lights out 9pm, she gets up at 7am

My 6yr old DD (Yr 1) goes to bed at 8pm and awake roughly 7am

AutumnFades · 21/05/2015 20:44

Year 5 - 8.30pm, sometimes 9pm.
Year 9 - whenever they like within reason

Floralnomad · 21/05/2015 20:44

We never had bed times mine have always self regulated and it's never been an issue for us .

theliverpoolone · 21/05/2015 22:55

For Yr3 dd (7) it used to be 7.30 with lights out by 8pm, but she's just got a hamster that doesn't wake up till 8, so bedtime is now slipping to 8.30pm.........

UniS · 21/05/2015 23:03

9 year old who likes his sleep.
If no late activity he will be in bed lights out at around 7.30pm. Two or three nights a week he doesn't get home from training or cubs till after 7.30, those nights he is in bed between 8 &9 asap after he gets in.
He has to be woken at 7.30 am, weekends he will sleep till 8.30 ish.

KaputKiss · 21/05/2015 23:07

Ds (7) y3, bed at 7.30/8. He is an early riser, so we try to get him to bed at a good time.

Dd (11) y6, bed at 9.

lostintoys · 22/05/2015 12:57

Yr 4 DS lights out 8pm. Up anywhere between 6 and 7.

TheoreticalOrder · 22/05/2015 17:05

DD (8, Y4) goes up at 7.45, we read etc til about 8.30
DS (11, Y6) goes up at 8.30, lights out at 9.30. Although when he's doing extra curricular sport eg matches etc it can be later

About an hour later in the holidays

Pipsqueak16 · 22/05/2015 18:39

DS1 &2 both go upstairs between 1830-1900. Story time is 1900-1915ish for DS2 (year1) then he has lights out. DS1 (year 2) normally does quiet reading in bed until I can get to him. Ideally I get in to DS1 around 1930- 1945 to read to him at lights out by 2000.
The issue we have at the moment is the people letting their (younger) kids play out in the street until 2030-2100 even on school nights. My boys can here the shouting/ screaming/ playing noisily and am sure they think I'm really mean to insist upon a sensible bedtime! I have explained that probably those children don't get their parent's reading them a bedtime story every night.
I am strict about bedtime- there are no TV's in their bedrooms and they will not be allowed to take gadgets up to bed either. I've seen the consequences of poor bedtime management in the course of my work.

Ragwort · 22/05/2015 18:54

My DS went to bed at 7pm from 0 to when he left primary school (occasional late nights for Beavers/Swimming). No different at weekends or holidays - unless we were doing something special. Even now at 14 he usually goes to bed around 9pm. Fortunately he's always been a brilliant sleeper due to my excellent routines Grin.

pastizzi · 22/05/2015 19:03

Mine have never been fond of sleep, sadly! Never needed to nap much as babies/ toddlers and never tired at times all other kids seem to be, eg starting nursery/ school.

Ds2 in reception just isn't tired until at least 8.30pm and wakes bright eyed and bushy tailed before 6.30am every morning.

Dd is in year 6 and goes up between 8-9.30pm. Again, up at crack of dawn. At sleepovers she hates having to wait 2 hours before her friends wake up the next morning!

They really are all different re sleep needs

thegreylady · 23/05/2015 10:36

Dgs aged 8 in Yr3 goes at 8 or just before. He gets ready at 7 and has supper and story with his 6 year old brother who is lying down by 7.30. Both boys are up between 6:30 and 7 in the morning.

pigsinmud · 23/05/2015 10:45

Dds (yrs 6 & 4) both go to bed at about 9:30.
Ds2 (yr 10) about 10:30
Ds1 (L6) about 10

Dd1 struggles to get to sleep. If she goes to bed earlier she tosses and turns and gets stressed because she can't sleep.

They both get 10 hours which is plenty for them. When ds2 was in yrs5&6 he was awake until midnight most nights as he couldn't fall asleep.
