KS1 sats question - Only level 3? Is that allowed ?

My DS is in year 2 and sitting his sats, his teacher is only giving him level 3 papers which i am surprised by as he's middle of the class. What if he does not pass these? Confused

Can anyone please advice as I assumed they have to sit level 2 first than level 3? Or is this normal?

Thank you.

He should sit level 2 first and if did well on that would be given the level 3 paper. He might be in an overall pretty bright class, so you might not realise he is actually a high achiever if looked at nationally - I know around half the class get level 3s at my dcs school.

The teacher is right - if she thinks he's a level 3 then that's the paper he should be doing. Ks1 SATs are to confirm the teacher assessment.

Thank you. I asked the teacher and he said there is no need for him to sit a level 2 and if he does not pass it will result in a teacher assessment score? Thought it was a little odd as about 50/50 is only sitting either l2 or l3 no combinations?

Children should only complete one test either the level 2 or level 3 most definitely not both. The class teacher has obviously assessed your child as working at level 3 and will use the results of the test to support that judgement.

The test results aren't reported they are merely there to help the teacher assess.

Does anyone know whether year 2 SATS are compulsory. When my DS had his parent evening in February I am sure his teacher said they were not doing them. He said he did a reading assessment today but that has been it.

Yes they are statutory schools must administer them to all eligible pupils

Yes, they're compulsory, but can be sat anytime between Sept and May, so can be used for different purposes depending on the time of year.

Unless you are in private education, in which case they are optional.
