KS2 Teachers. How often do you have to level writing?

I've been at it for 4 hours and I reckon I've another two to do.
Feeling fed up! Sad

At my previous school it was every week - apparently that's what the moderator who came into year 6 said was required. Then we were told we only needed to do it once a fortnight. I was very, very glad I was in KS1 by then as I'd never have kept up with the marking if I'd still been in year 6.

Current school - haven't actually been told... I've leveled 2 pieces this half term because that feels about right to me.

Asleeponasunbeam · 17/05/2015 18:34

Every week for us!
Don't take us as your standard though. Bloody ridiculous! No impact on progress anyway.

spanieleyes · 17/05/2015 18:36

Every week for me too ( year 6!) Bloody waste of time! 6 hours every Sunday I never get back!

Our English teacher assesses every piece of work in Y5 and Y6 but that's her choice. We officially assess twice a term.

KingscoteStaff · 17/05/2015 18:53

End of each unit - so every 3ish weeks.

WombatStewForTea · 17/05/2015 19:01

Used to be a couple of times a half term. Now we don't. We've scrapped levels so when we do termly assessments we look back at a range of evidence from that term.

AsBrightAsAJewel · 17/05/2015 19:02

Officially it was twice a term, because you level a writer not an individual piece of writing, then used that evidence to update National Curriculum levels on Target Tracker!

Now we don't "level" because there are no levels. But what we now do is each time we mark we check off the criteria that have been met in the new curriculum, then half termly summarise that into awarding a Step on TT.

I've been teaching yr6 for the last 5 years in an outstanding primary. We've been moderated twice and had ofsted during that time. I'm also literacy co-ordinator. In yr 6, we level at the end of a unit so that we have a range of writing levelled, so every half term at least, sometimes twice. Other year groups, I would expect at least once every half term.
Anything else is crazy and counter productive imo. No wonder people are leaving the profession!

Millymollymama · 18/05/2015 17:48

I am a Governor and I know our school does what Major says above. Some more might be done if there is cause for concern in lack of progress or where a teacher needs some mentoring. Otherwise, it is too much for any human being to cope with!

mrz · 18/05/2015 17:49

We have never followed the literacy strategy/framework or used the unit plans so that wouldn't be an option.

teacherwith2kids · 18/05/2015 19:46

We assess 3 pieces of writing (very occasionally 2 or 4, if a term is unusually shorrt or long) each 'full' term, looking to cover a full range of different writing types over the year - the basic rule of thumb being that we look for work done 'independently', rather than immediately after input. So if we are teaching e.g. creating suspense just at the moment, we might assess a piece of writing that calls for suspense in a couple of weeks' time. Often it will be writing based on the children's direct experience - a setting description following a trip, instructions for a science experiment, a 'historical diary' based on a history topic, that kind of thing.

Hiowever, to consider a writer 'in the round' we may well use other evidence from across all their books in addition to the specific 'assessment' pieces. A 'judgement' in terms of the school tracking system is entered once every full term.

Same in all year groups, all the way up to Y6.

Thanks for the replies.
We were doing it fortnightly last year but this year it's all been a bit up in the air with the changes. The big writes have to be done in their Literacy book so it has to be marked that weekend too which is utterly stupid in my opinion!
DS started year 6 at a middle school this year and as a KS2 teacher I was shocked and dismayed that his written pieces in English were marked weeks - even half terms after writing and very often after the next piece was done. How was he going to progress without written feedback and targets? Funny thing is - he had a really good year which makes me wonder whether marking is as important as we think. I don't know how it worked for the less good writers without a teacher for a mother though. Grin

Usually once a fortnight. However we will be moderated after half term, so doing lots more to collect evidence. We are in SM in an inadequate LA, so the pressure is massive.
We levelled for an hour or so tonight and will continue over lunch and tomorrow evening. There are 36 in our yr6 class so it takes forever.
