Basic question on how much uniform?

Ds starting primary in September, standard uniform of polo shirts, pinafore dress and sweatshirt or cardi.

How many bits of each would people recommend?

TIA...

I personally think it depends if you like to wash a lot.

I started with 3 of each but after one term bought more so DD had 5 of each in her wardrobe. I didn't like to wash on Tuesday evening as DD came home with food all over her cardigan and dirt all over her pinoforte.

She is now in Y3 and wears cardigans and skirts 2-3 days in a row but in YR - Y2 she changed daily.

TeenAndTween · 15/05/2015 12:02

Many people seem to go for 5 - i.e. clean every day.

My DDs have always got on fine with 2 - aim to wear for the week, but if they get very grubby then swap to spare.

Is your DD a messy eater? if so then a) sweatshirts as they cover up what's underneath better, & b) buy more.

Gileswithachainsaw · 15/05/2015 12:08

five shirts/polo shirts. five bottoms, and three of the sweatshirts. One to wear one in the wash and one in the wardrobe.

plenty of socks and underwear.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2015 12:12

my dc have 5 shirts and 5 trousers/skirts each. They have 2 jumpers/cardigans but rarely wear them. I got short sleeved shirts to minimise dirty sleeves/cuffs

KenDoddsDadsDog · 15/05/2015 12:14

DD has got on find with 6 polo shirts (they take the most battering) , 3 skirts , 2 cardigans and a jumper . They all still fit but the branded cardigans are washed out after a year .

CMOTDibbler · 15/05/2015 12:15

Depends on how grubby your child is as well - mine is the sort to be rolling around on the field, diving for the ball in football etc, so needs everything clean everyday. Some children seem to come out as clean as they went in

chocolateyy · 15/05/2015 12:17

I have 5 trousers, and 6 shirts (they come in 2 packs from M&S!)

But I do find that the shirts lose their freshness, so I tend to have 6 short sleeve shirts (Spring & Summer terms) and 6 long sleeve shirts (Autumn & Winter)

My DS will not wear a jumper, so I stopped buying them.

Cedar03 · 15/05/2015 12:25

Definitely depends on the child. We had four school cardigans/jumpers and at least 5 skirts/trousers. My daughter had school dinners every day in reception and mostly seemed to use her clothes as a dinner plate. I wanted to have enough to get us through the week. If she'd been eating sandwiches she might not have got quite so messy all the time.

Mopmay · 15/05/2015 12:46

There a whole long thread on this in chat right now! Both mine trash everything everyday so I have at least 4 bottoms and 6 tips for both. There is no way I could get all the food / mud / paint / glue / pen out with a wipe.
Other DC look pristine at 3.15pm
I can't be bothered racing to wash stuff midweek. I was when convenient, knowing the week is covered

magichandles · 15/05/2015 13:43

DD is a fairly clean child and we have been fine with:

4 x polo shirts (only really needed 3)
1 x pinafore dress; 2 x skirts
1 x cardigan; 2 x sweatshirts.

The sweatshirts & cardi are really good actually as they dry overnight if needed.

MakeItACider · 15/05/2015 13:47

There's a thread in chat on this here which is quite interesting.

Covers it all I think.

I'm of the 'buy lots' rather than 'wash lots' brigade.

Mopmay · 15/05/2015 13:57

I'm in the buy lots camp. At the mo summer dresses are £4 a go. Costs more to wash all the time

MrsChocolateBrownie · 15/05/2015 20:00

Ds is generally quite clean, even when painting... We have 3 trousers, 3 jumpers, 5 polos, a spare no logo'd uniform that stays in school and 1 pe kit (which stays in school and comes back for holidays). Worked really well for us

TandemFlux · 15/05/2015 20:06

Mine gets grubby daily, so 5. However my eldest only has two

LL0015 · 15/05/2015 20:12

DD always managed with two of everything except three shirts. Two summer dresses as well.

DS could wear same shorts or trousers all week but needs new tank AND shirt daily. But he has gone through the knee of his trousers by about Feb.

BikeRunSki · 15/05/2015 20:15

I like the idea of PE kit having holidays ??

JemimaPuddlePop · 16/05/2015 12:16

My ds's have five polos (clean each day), two jumpers and two trousers.

Sometimes they can get two or three wears out of jumpers/trousers, sometimes they need fresh each day.

WhoahThereCrazyHorse · 16/05/2015 13:30

Thanks all - v helpful

Hi,

My daughter is 6 and I get:
1 skirt (Asda)
2 pinafores (although she has complained that they are difficult to take off for P.E. so I may just buy skirts this year)...Asda
5 polo tops (Asda), also has her brother's logo old ones as spares
5 pack of socks (Asda)
3 pairs of tights (Asda)
2 school logo cardigans and 1 cheapie cardigan (Asda)
P.E kit is 2 white tshirts (Asda, came in a 2 pack) and 2 black shorts (again, in a 2 pack from Asda). One set stays in school until each holiday.
Logo coats (hand me downs from older brother) and usually an Asda winter coat for cold weather as school ones not that warm.

I tend to do a school uniform wash on a Wednesday (my day off) and a Saturday.

Good old Asda! I have always bought my 11 year old son uniform from Asda and they wash extremely well.

lolalotta · 17/05/2015 05:40

I would recommend pinafore dresses as they don't stain as easily as a white shirt and a skirt! Grin
