I know, I know: reading levels in Year 2

I KNOW you shouldn't compare, and children develop at different paces etc etc, but would you mind sharing what reading level (Oxford Reading Tree, with numerical levels, not the colours) your Year 2 child is on, and what month their birthday is?

Is reading age appropriate books from the school's stash really free reading?

Floggingmolly - I could not agree more. DD was reading Topsy & Tim books at a very early age, did this make her a free reader then? Grin

Tbh I don't care what books my kids read as long as they are age appropriate & they enjoy them.

DD bypassed the majority of the reading scheme as she could read before she started nursery.

DS was taught to read at school and laboured through all the levels. Imo it was no coincidence that he disliked reading when in KS1.

Revive a almost 2 year old zombie thread just say that... Confused

Personally i dont feel the age the book band people give you and what dc can actually usually read tally at all, so yes you need to ask real humans on here.

Op my dd has always been out of step with her reading levels since year 1. They dont match and I provide her reading material at home to keep her going if it was down to the school, it would be a disaster. Its confusing and doesnt make sense at all.

IknowIknowIknow - what level is your child??

For most kids the month of birth doesn't count for much by end of year 2 IMO. Parents bang on about it but there are kids who are Sept born who are some of the weakest readers and we have an August child who is a brilliant reader. Key issue is how often they read.

It seems like end of Year 1 they are reasonably spread out - everything from 1+ to about 5/6. End of Year 2 many have caught up and the range is more narrow. Currently top end around level 10 but still the bottom end around level 4. I cant see a link between age and ability. More of a link between how frequently they practice.
