Year 4 DS is struggling every week with his reading focus. The teacher seems to be somewhat obsessed with Michael morpurgo books and a new book is set each week with utterly stupid focus targets like "write a bullet point to summarise each chapter " - and then DS is told off( for writing 2 sentences as opposed to 1 )to summarise the elongated, complicated, harrowing and completely morbid chapters.

Every book seems to heavily feature a dead parent. Without going into personal details, ds is highly sensitive and very anxious and there are problems with his attachment to a father who is not around a great deal. I don’t get on with his teacher particularly well and don't wish to go into personal family details with her.

However can I tell her that I'm not prepared to have my child unsettled any further by the same author every week? Apparently he's made to miss his playtime if it's not done.

Any advice appreciated, even if it's to say I'm being ridiculous.

Thanks

Every time a child picks up an MM book in the book corner, I ask if they are really sure and have they read this other book... Guided reading often happens first thing in the morning, and his books are rarely a pleasant start to the day.

My year 2 son loves MM. I dont think you should get involved and voice your opinions. She is the teacher and leave her to do her job. If every parent voiced their opinion as to whether they like an author or not it would make their life impossible. MM doenst only just write about death of parents. Children love his books!

Crouchend some children love his books. And that's the point. Different children like different themes/styles/authors. So school should offer a variety so that everyone gets a bit of what they like and is introduced to new things too.

My 7 year old daughter loved "I believe in unicorns", so I read it and it made me cry...a beautiful story.

Absolutely BarbarianMum Im sure he's going to read other books other than MM throughout his life. If I let my son read only books he thought he liked we would just be reading Tom Palmer books and Wimpey Kid books. Im sure the teacher will introduce new books after all there are only so many Michael M books to read. I think you must just let her get on with her job.
