Is this homework really appropriate for year 4?

Ideally homework should be set at a level whereby the child is able to complete it by themselves with minimal adult help. Of course, we are here to help when the child may not have fully grasped the maths or english topic in class, and we can supplement so that the child can complete the homework by themselves. However, it is not for parents to do the homework.

DS1 comes home with his homework, which is to look up footprint.wwf.org.uk/
on t'web and answer the questions.

To me, most of the questions could only be answered by an adult.

Is this really appropriate for year 4?

I have just don't it, can't see a reason a year 4 child couldn't answer most of them and it's hardly time consuming.

I have just done it. I can't see why most year 4 children wouldn't be able to answer most and it only takes a few minutes.

It seems fine to me. It isn't that the questions are too hard for him to understand, rather that he simply isn't party to the information.

Well I haven't done it all but I'd expect an average ability 8/9 yr pls to be able to answer most of the questions and your input would be minimal. Maybe a bit of reading the question or giving answers they don't know. An interesting topic for kids to consider.

He might need to ask you if you buy organic/local food but that seems pretty minimal input?

I really don't see what the issue is with those questions. It's quite a simple quiz, your DS may need to ask you for help with a few of the questions.

I think it's an interesting homework assignment.

I thought it was quite interesting. He might need to check with you about some of the facts, but there is no harm in starting a discussion.

steppemum · 29/04/2015 21:38

my kids could do it. They might need to ask over some things, but others they could work out with help, which is part of the thought process.

I've just done it. My dcs would have been able to answer most of the questions on there in Y4.
Well actually I'm pretty sure they both did a similar 'test' in that year.

Now tbh, the idea is to make the children think about what they do, how much you buy etc... so even if the questions aren't answered tryfully, it's not a major issue.
The one area where the dcs would have struggled is about the size of the car.
