Is this really suitable for an 9 year old as their homework?

Ideally homework should be set at a level whereby the child is able to complete it by themselves with minimal adult help. Of course, we are here to help when the child may not have fully grasped the maths or english topic in class, and we can supplement so that the child can complete the homework by themselves. However, it is not for parents to do the homework.

DS1 comes home with his homework, which is to look up footprint.wwf.org.uk/
on t'web and answer the questions.

To me, most of the questions could only be answered by an adult.

Is this really appropriate for year 4?

That's true Smidge, but you cannot always book onto a library computer, and when we had no internet access, I was up in arms at the suggestion that my DC had to miss out on lunch time fun with their friends every day!

There does have to be an offer of computers after school, and an option of a non internet homework. I think that is the legal position, from my experience in schools.

Poor teachers, dammed if they do, dammed if they don't.

I wasn't damning the teacher Chip, I was just saying the only possible critisism I could think of for this lovely homework would be if there had been no arrangements made for a child without internet.

I just did it with dd11 we got three planets hangs my head in total shame I thought I was much kinder to the planet than that! That aside I didn't think it was inappropriate for a nine year old

ememem84 · 02/05/2015 10:58

I'd need 3.22 planets. the thing that shocked me was that i had to estimate that i spent between 100-300 on cosmetics within the last 12 months.

The flights to NZ let me down, as did the fact that as much as i want to recycle everything other than glass, i can't. Because my flat doesn't have an outside, or the space to put separate recycling bins...

I think its great homework by the way. i'll suggest this to my sis who teaches.

I'm going to get ds (9) to do it, think it's fab.
I'd need 3.8 planets Shock driving a large diesel didn't help, and living rurally, so I have to drive everywhere was probably the thing that tipped me over the edge.

I think it's fine and quite interesting. I got 4.14 planets but I flew abroad for work, commute quite far and don't use public transport. Can I split it with dh and our children please?

goingmadinthecountry · 02/05/2015 12:34

I'm being picky about schools and computers. I know children with school transport/lifts from others with no internet access who couldn't stay after school. From our house, the nearest library is 8 miles (no public transport) and computers are like gold dust. I don't think we always realise just how many children don't have fair access.

Charis1 · 02/05/2015 12:38

Lots of children don't have internet access , which is why the school needs to offer alternatives, such as access at lunchtime and after school, alternative homework,
