How are reception children allocated to classes?

I'm curious to know how this is done. DD is going to a 2 form entry school and apparently we will be told which class she is in when we visit in June. The teachers visit her nursery regularly, but probably go to the on site nursery a bit more. Will they have spoken to the nursery staff and try to create balanced classes or is it more random than that?

They'll try to have a balance of gender, age, EAL and SEN in each class.

They do talk to nursery staff to find out about good/bad groupings.

Also some will follow through older siblings into the same class/same teacher for continuity of parent/teacher relationships.

And I believe they also try to separate children with the same first name where possible - at least that appears to be what happens at our school.

There isn't a standard method ... Some schools might decide to put older children in one class and younger in another. Others might decide to balance the classes. Others might put high fliers in one and lower ability in another ...

My nursery has asked if we have preferences about which children are in the same class as DD - I was a bit surprised but thought it was good they are taking account of parent preferences.

Are you sure mrsz that they are labelled as high fliers or low ability before they even start reception? Seems a bit crazy.

When ds1 started the two forms were split by age - autumn and winter born in one class and spring summer in the other. Not sure how ds2's will be split as we moved do a different school.

yes I'm sure that some schools organise classes based on nursery assessment data (been there as a teacher) just as I'm sure some organise it by "confidence" or age or a huge variety of other criteria.

Our school talks to the nurseries to get an idea about friendships / characters etc. They try to split the children so each class has an equal number of girls / boys, high / low ability, well behaved / challenging, young / old. Its quite a difficult task and the teachers spend ages trying to get the balance right.

My Ds's school took 32 reception children last september. 11 with birthdays up to 22nd December went in a mixed reception/year 1 class, 21 including my DS with birthdays 23rd December on went in a reception class. As far as I can tell from other parents, this has worked quite well.

Ours tries to balance sex, age, SEN, separate/keep together twins (depending what the parents want). They mix after reception if necessary to balance ability and personality/behaviour. Lots of different pre school settings so no friendship groups etc but they do try to put children with one person they know if possible.

In my school they are split into three classes by age. When they go into year one they are mixed up and then the reception teachers try to put them into balanced classes.

Ours split it alphabetically. They just have a list of 60 kids in alphabetical order and halve it.
So one class of A to Ls (ish depends on all the kids last names) and one class of M to Zs

Ours used to do it by birthday. Two lists one boy, one girls down from oldest to youngest and alternate classes.

If the preschools that children were coming up from suggested separations for good reason they would do it, they wouldn't deliberately put them together though.

Our school never spoke to the nursery.
There is a balance of ages in the class and gender, that's it!

For my kids primary (two classes per year), it's a mixture of date of births, gender and any additional needs the pupils might have. The primary school teachers don't visit the nursery schools ( there's a wide range of nursery schools that feed into the primary and of course some kids don't go to any kind of pre P1 setting).

Ours was alphabetical with a bit of movement to get equal boys and girls in each class. Worked well but meant that Twins and their cousin ended up in the same class against their parents wishes!

Ours has 3 with a mix of race, ability, sex, age etc DC are kept with at least a friend or two if possible. Twins are separated or together dependant upon parent and teacher view of what's best for each set ( 4 pairs in DD year)

When mine started reception is was done alphabetically - no other process involved (twins were separated)

Ours is done by age. The youngest in a straight class and the older ones in a composite (except in exceptional circumstances).

Here one class is September-March and the other is April-August, roughly. They split the children so half are each class.

Ours is done by keeping preschool and nursery groups together as far as possible.
