Maximum distance for primary children to travel?

I've been wondering about this for a while; I know if a child is allocated a school more than 2 miles away they get help with transport (this applies to my DS so I'm familiar with the process). But is there a maximum distance that the LA have to stick to? Eg. If the nearest available school was say, 20 miles away, would the LA offer it or would that be deemed as unreasonable?

There is no fixed maximum distance. However, given government guidance, there are good grounds to argue that a school is an unreasonable distance away if the journey takes more than 45 minutes each way.

Ah ok. Thanks for explaining. You may not remember me prh47 as I've been off mumsnet for about a year and only re - registered for this admission round but you gave me very good advice a couple of years ago when I had no school place for DS. He is now thriving and just found out DD has a place at the same school. Thanks again :)

Just out of interest if your dS gets free transport to an allocated school and you then choose that for a sibling do you pay for the sibling transport? Woul be very bonkers if just putting a 2nd child in same taxi

Theas, no, we only get transport assistance DS as he was not given a choice of school. As it's DD'S chosen school she isn't entitled to help. DS got a taxi initially but I've now learned to drive so we claim mileage instead. I'm not sure what would happen if he was still in a taxi - DD wouldn't be entitled to a seat and if the taxi was full we'd be a bit stuffed! If that was still the case I'd have applied for nearer schools for her.
