My DS is in year 5 with a diagnosis of mild learning difficulties, ASD and dyspraxia. Up to upper KS2 he has been coping relatively well both academically and socially (bearing in mind his difficluties) He is statemented with 19 hours 1:1.
However the academic demands of upper KS2 are proving very hard for him although his maths remains strong (recently levelled at 4C). But his literacy is 3C (a tad optimistic imho) and he is finding the work very hard. His CT who is an NQT has suggested he comes off NC levels for literacy and they develop an individual programme for him. I have no issue with this in principle but I was wondering what experienced teachers thought...my major concern is that he is emotionally struggling because he realises he cant perform to the expected level and bed wetting has started as well as emotional outbursts...any thought? By the way I couldn't give a stuff about year 6 sats and would rather he was puled anyway because of the stress.
TIA

If he's in Y5 he shouldn't be on NC levels as they no longer exist so the school is free to use whatever assessment measure they choose.
If he has a statement for 19 hours 1-1 he should have either an IEP, Pupil Profile or Provision map ( all have a similar purpose) already and aren't a substitute for assessment.

If school is free to use whatever system they choose, then why can't they use NC levels? Confused

Because the levels describe attainment in the old curriculum, that is no longer being taught in Y5, so the statements on the levels don't match what children are being taught.

Thanks a lot. All I know is the CT said she would like to take him off NC levels...I presume that is what they are using. The SENCO is fluffy and sweet but not at all proactive and I have spent most of his primary years fighting for adequate provision. He has an IEP which is principally concerned with social/emotional and sensory issues and one literacy target.
Thats very helpful all..thanks

They should use the National Curriculum but the current curriculum not the one that is matched to levels ragged.

As someone said continuing to use levels is like measuring your weight in inches ... They don't match!
