I am just interested in whether any primary teachers had a view on what age the author of this independent piece of writing is. I have some concerns and would just be interested to know; spelling and grammar were exactly as typed. Thank you to anyone who is able to offer their opinion - much appreciated.

=========================================

Once upon a time their lived 3 beoutiful girls called Jane Lossy and Lilly. One day they went to the woods Suddenly a bright light was shining in the air a Buoetiful colourful fairy she waved her wand and said abracadabra turn this wood into the most Beoutiful and colourful fairyland. But Lossy and Lilly got to scared and ran back Home screaming Aaaaaaaaaaaaa But Jane was very brave and wondered what had Hapend She didn't know that the Bright light was a fairy. then the bright light came towards her and said I'll turn you into a fairy if you want me to but we still haven't got a princess fairy then I'll turn you into a princess if you want me to. Then you'd rule the fairy land. I think I beter go home. But I'll see you tomorow for my work in the woods. Ok then. Then suddenly some glitter sparcles and colours came falling down from the air it was the Queen fairy called Miss Serena Magic. She appeared and said has someone been torking to a human in a very scary angry and loud voice Evryone said No and then Serena said good and did not now that a fairy had said something to a person and then Miss Serena said get on with your work. Then the fairyland turned Back to the normal woods and all the fairys followed queen Serena to the real fairy land but too of the fairys didn;t now were to go because she was too busy torking to Jane. then Jane notesed that her family had gone and told the little fairy called twirl and twirl got so scared she'd lost her family and freinds she started to cry. Could you take a picture of it too to add?
It can be useful to see how letters are formed, use of capitals/punctuation/finger spaces, etc.

butterfliesinmytummy · 09/04/2015 18:50

Not a teacher but my dd is year 1 (she's 6 and her birthday is September so eldest in the year) and this is the sort of thing she might produce. I would say year 1 or 2....?

Nannyplum2015 · 09/04/2015 18:53

I would say a bright child in year one or a struggling child in year 4/5 or anything in between.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 09/04/2015 19:01

Sorry - the paper has got her (very unusual) name (which will out me totally!) all over it so I only have an excerpt - hope that is enough Hulababy :-)

Year 2-3?

Skeeter3 · 09/04/2015 19:08

P3-4, aged 6-7 years.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/04/2015 19:16

Probably about year 2 I'd guess, but could easily be a fairly able year 1 and I've seen some year 5 produce less than this.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 09/04/2015 19:22

Okay. Thank you. I know I have no idea who any of you are really but you have put my mind at rest!

She is a July birthday Year 1 i.e. currently 5, will be 6 in July. I have been told she is lagging behind. Whilst I appreciate she may not be completely reproducing this level of work at school, I don't think that story (which she wrote unprompted this morning) reflects a laggard...!

I will go back to benignly ignoring it as the idiosyncrasy of a slight eccentric class teacher.

Thank you all.

Year 1 or 2 - where do you people live. Can't believe a 5/6 year old would write something like this. OP am I right in thinking your child is very advanced - IF she is year 1 or 2 then YES very advanced. I'd say nearer Year 3 or 4.

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/04/2015 19:29

I think the problem could be that the teacher is looking at the lack of punctuation, rather than the quality of the composition.

The ideas are there, the spelling is really good and the punctuation can be worked on, I wouldn't say your child was lagging behind at year one if she's writing like this at school.

Preminstreltension · 09/04/2015 19:37

The teacher sounds nuts. DS is also y1 but not 6 till August. He couldn't produce this or such neat writing. Afaik, he's doing fine.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 09/04/2015 19:41

Yes - you could be right Theimpossiblegirl. She's a very old-school teacher - delightful in some ways, but difficult in others. And it is true that the punctuation could be better!

But I have merrily sort-of-ignored her all year thinking that were no real problems but suddenly I had a panic that my attitude was a bit cavalier and, given that you can't ever neutrally speak to people you know in RL about things like this, I thought I would put it to the MN jury as DD decided to write this this morning.

Thanks again.

My DD is in year one and her writing is nowhere near this standard and she's is the 'average' range.

NanaNina · 09/04/2015 19:41

The teacher's comment is a cause for concern.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 09/04/2015 19:45

In isolation I think that's true NanaNina but, as ever, it's not quite so black and white.

My overall view is that she is only 5, it;s early days and we've all got a nutter teacher in our past!

OP posts:
Verbena37 · 09/04/2015 19:50

I would say a year 4/5.

mrz · 09/04/2015 19:52

I would say this is the writing of a Y1 child who enjoys books and stories and that's reflected in her writing.
Is she behind compared to her peers? Only her teacher can say.

Verbena37 · 09/04/2015 19:56

Aha,crust saw your reply. My DS is in yr five and this is similar to what he would produce. Whilst he is level 5reading, he is level 3a for writing and commonly makes mistakes like your child. Capitals in the middle of sentences, random ideas etc.

However, her ideas seem to flow. DS has soooo many ideas, he just forgets all hints of grammar and throws it all on the page! When he remembers, he adds a bit of punctuation in here and there Grin

Molichite · 09/04/2015 20:40

Amazing volume and spelling for a 5 year old! We struggle to get more than 3 sentences out of my Y1 boy. Some days he point blank refuses to complete the task at all, which is a bigger problem! I think you need to look at what she is producing at school really, it might be quite different.

Verbena37 · 09/04/2015 21:23

Oops!!!
Misread that as year 5 !!!!
I think her writing is amazing for year 1 then.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 09/04/2015 21:59

It's interesting the variety of views on the level. Thanks again everyone - always good to have an objective sounding board!

Quite frankly I see spelling and punctuation not dissimilar to this in secondary. Every child is different, good progress is the most important thing Smile

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/04/2015 23:50

Depends what the teacher meant by lagging behind. Lagging behind in terms of national expectations seems unlikely, lagging behind the rest of her class depends on the other children in the class. If it's a particularly high attaining class she could be above expectations but lagging behind the rest of the class.

mrz · 10/04/2015 08:01

Looking at it closely the spelling profile is quite strange

EnidAlexandraRollins · 10/04/2015 08:09

How do you mean mrz ? In my (unprofessional!) opinion I find her spelling quite odd in terms of what she gets right and wrong, but I'm intrigued to know what you see.
