Verbal reasoning scores and papers

Hi all,

I am currently helping my son prepare for the 11+ and using the Bond books. He's currently on the 11 - 12+ papers for the verbal reasoning. His scores range from 77 - 86 percent. Should I continue with these papers for VR prep or branch out? We started with the 10-11+ initially (He's in Year 5).

I am doing a DIY job so advice gratefully received!

It all depends on which school. You do need to move off Bond papers definitely as they are generally easier than others - this time last year DS was doing the same ones in NVR and VR as you are using and getting 96%+. I would take a look at elevenplusforum and ask on there.

I always say it is the NVR that is very important, because it is very likely children will not have met anything like it in school. There is almost a 'formula' to the types of problem in NVR, and the more of those he can experience, the better.

It does really depend on which tests your area does too. Our area just does verbal reasoning no NVR.
I agree with waitingandhoping the elevenplusforum is really useful. It goes through each area and what materials are best to use etc.
is there a particular area of questions that he needs more work on. It might be better to concentrate on looking at these types of questions for a bit before doing more tests?
I find with dd it's just a matter of more vocab building. Hope that helps.

There is no answer to this. For some grammars those scores would be high enough. Those papers would be good enough. For some not.

Some schools do CEM test some do the other one (whose name escapes me)

Don't panic by all the panic mongering here and on the 11+ forum - but don't be naive about your chances either.

Bucks grammars are easy to get into. London grammars aren't.....

So..... do your research.

Thanks girls. I'll look into other papers also.

The elevenplusforum is set up so you can look at your area, and then find the most useful papers and booksfor that area's exam.

I did the work at home and bought the books through them too.
