Newland House School, Teddington versus Rokeby

Hi I am hoping to pick the brains of parents who have any experience of these schools. I have a son who is due to start reception this year and a daughter in a few years time. I have looked at Newland House and think it is ideal for both of them and have been offered places for them. However it is a 15-20 minute drive (with limited parking in the area) whereas Rokeby is a 15-20 minute walk. Although my son does not have offer of a place at Rokeby he is high up on the waiting list and he could stay at his preprep until he gets a place or offer of 7+ exams (we love his local preprep - Parkhill hence the dilemma). If I went this route I would still need to find a different school for my daughter though so may still encounter a bus journey or have a drive for her later on! Have any mums been in a similar situation or who have experience of either of these schools and their approach? Newland House seemed more relaxed than Rokeby but Rokeby's boys and facilities are very impressive ! Newland House is co-ed and seems to offer an all-round education. However, although I have been to a few school events at Newland House I have never heard from the head only the deputy head so really don't have any idea as to what he is like. Any advice or inside knowledge would be most welcome from parents of either of these schools - thank you in advance.

The sisters of Rokeby boys often attend Holy Cross next door, which seems a good arrangement. There is a lot to be said for proximity, IMO, so this might work better for you. My son attended Rokeby and I was happy with it although the 11+ pre-test and 13+ common entrance is a very stressful time with many/most boys being tutored. However from what I hear, this is all pretty similar at Newland House.

Thank you for your response. It is very reassuring to hear you were happy with Rokeby. I am surprised to hear that children at private schools need tutoring though - I had no idea it was that competitive. At what stage does tutoring normally need to start?
