how much progress can I expect from now until end of Y2

We got given a half year report for DS today with SATs levels (he is year 2). He got 2B writing, 2A reading and 2C maths.

I just wondered how much progress I can expect then between now and his final year end grades. Will they stay roughly the same? I know children progress at different rates but I assume the school will be using these grades to work towards final year targets and it would be good to know what they would expect him to be at end of year?

It partly depends what "final year end grades" are at your school - My dC's school reported the formal assessment mark, which was made in May. Obviously if yours are genuine year end grades, there is more progress to be made between now and May and now and July :)

Rule of thumb for KS1 would be a whole level a year, so perhaps one sublevel progress might be reasonable. But this partly depends whether he is "just" into his current level or confidently there. Also moving up a level (i.e. from 2A to 3C is often harder than moving within a level).

Thanks that's really interesting particularly about moving up to a new level as I was really hoping he would get a 3 for reading!

A level 3 for reading will put the school under pressure to achieve a level 5 at the end of KS2 (at least in old-speak). If they assess in May, the teacher may prefer to be conservative.

I've heard that sometimes schools mark KS1 conservatively to show more progress and value added in KS2 but not sure if this is true or just a rumour!!

Actually two sub levels a year is very good progress. Few children make a whole grade a year, but it can be done. Why do you not ask the teacher what his targets are for the end of the year. The teacher will know what he/she is aiming for. I would definitely like to see the 2C become a 2B, but if your DS has already made huge progress over the last year, he may be on a plateaux and consolidating right now. Progress is not always even either, so if he has been on these levels for a while, you could see an improvement over the next two months with a big push.

There has been a history of over egging the grades in ks1 in some infant schools and this puts huge pressure on the junior schools when the assessments in ks1 have been far too generous. In a primary school, the assessments should be moderated by other teachers to achieve a consensus and teachers are now keen that they grades they award are secure, not just attained with a fair wind. I would be more concerned about the 2C because that, currently, is below average.
