No progress in reading for ds all year

We've just received a short report detailing the results of recent assessments for my ds who is in year 2. He has made no progress at all in reading since leaving year 1 - he left yr 1 with a 2A and is still firmly stuck there 2 terms later. Is this normal? Should I be worried?
For a bit of background, he is in a mixed year class - one which has been extremely difficult ( several children with behavioural problems, one with severe behavioural problems who causes a lot of disruption in class, also class has 31 pupils so over numbers ). Ds has only read individually to an adult twice all year, he and his twin sister say they only do guided reading every now and again, we never receive any comprehension style homework to do at home, dt's say the only time they do this type of work at school is for assessments ( obviously I know they may be wrong about this though ).
I'm really concerned about this and want to raise it with the school but don't want to go in all guns blazing if this is normal. Can't raise it at parents evening as teacher is off sick and parents evening has been cancelled. What would you do in my position?

Arrange to speak to the teacher on their return from sickness absence. They will be able to explain how reading happens in the class and hopefully the lack of progress.

Did your DS have the same teacher last year? There could be a problem with the teacher assessment at the end of Y1 being incorrect. This can happen in sometimes if a teacher is inexperienced with levelling and assessment. If it is the same teacher (you mentioned a mixed year group class) then this obviously won't be the case.

2A is well above average for a Y1 child and sometimes children can make massive leaps in progress followed by a period where they plateau.

It could be that provision for reading is inadequate and this will need to be addressed.

I do think your next step is to speak to the class teacher as soon as you are able to get a clearer picture.

Oh, and most importantly, the teacher should tell you what they are doing to make sure your DS does make progress from now on.

Thank you Pam, yes I definitely think I need to talk to someone to find out what the school are going to do to help him progress but also what I can do at home to help him. I'm not sure whether the teacher will be back before Easter though and really need some guidance sooner rather than later.
It was a different teacher last year so I guess the level could have been slightly out, I'm just shocked that it has been almost 7 months and there appears to have been no progress at all. I would have hoped for at least one sub level.

My dd is Y1 and has made no progress. Left Fs2 at p6 and is still p6. I work in a school and we expect 3 sub levels a year progress. Speak to the teacher to find out what's going on.

Thanks MissPricklePants - our school also says 3 sub levels should be achieved, so his target for SATs is a 3A, however SATs are 2 months away and he's still only on a 2A which is why I'm so worried.
In the grand scheme of things the level probably doesn't matter too much as he has achieved what is expected of a year 2 - but it's the lack of any progress that is worrying me. Hope your dd's school starts helping her to progress.

If the teacher isn't going to return, see if you can make an appt with whoever is covering the class.

As for helping him improve at home I would suggest lots of reading with you and independently (books he enjoys so it's not a chore). Make sure you have lots of discussion around how characters feel, what they're doing, plot prediction, features of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Obviously it would help to know if there is a specific issue that you can focus on though so you can really work on what he needs to do to improve. Hopefully someone at the school will be able to help you. Good luck!
