Yr3 Teacher wont allow children to handwash in class after eating a piece of fruit (apple) ...children were left with sticky hands and told to bring fruit that is "not sticky" in future..... regardless of how sticky the piece of fruit the issue of handwashing is questionable.
Is this teacher right? Or is this a bit draconian? Would you like your child to be left with dirty hands and continue working with paper work untill next break or possibly hometime?
I personally believe children should be allowed and encouraged to be clean and handwash obviously if they feel it neccessary and not simply time wasting.

Supply a small packet of wipes? They can't have everyone traipsing out to wash their hands.

Wouldn't the children be eating their fruit just before a break time when they could then go and wash their hands if necessary? If not I would just put one of those mini packs of wipes in their lunch box. Have you actually heard this from the teacher or from the children?

MinceSpy · 16/03/2015 13:43

If the sticky fruit was eaten at break time then that's when they should wash their hands. Thirty kids traipsing out to wash hands during class time would be chaotic.

The class go for swimming...they return to school and eat a piece of fruit in class, after this they continue with classwork...,no time given to handwash if they need to even though a sink is in the class

No one is suggesting 30 kids traipsing out of the class

Hmm. have you spoken to the teacher, or is this DD's version of events?

Of course children with sticky fingers should be allowed to wash them and that would be desirable for the teacher too. Some children's hands need washing every time things aren't going quite their way though, and teacher would be on to that.

As with anything else, if it's causing a problem for your DD, speak to the teacher.

Why do they need to eat the fruit in class? Couldn't it wait until a break or could they eat it on the journey back to school?

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 18:23

Speak to the teacher and if this is correct, ask if you can give them a pack of wipes so they don't have sticky hands. If this is true you will probably find there is a perfectly valid reason.

TBH i would expect a child in year 3 to be able to eat an apple without needing to wash their hands afterwards. How much mess can it possibly make?
