Book suggestions for 8 year old dd who is a reluctant reader!

I just cannot seem to find a book that she cannot put down and am longing for her to develop a love of books. I read to her lots and she listens to lots of story audiobooks at bedtime, but is quite lazy about reading herself. Same with writing. It's not that she can't either - teacher raves about her reading and would be surprised how little she does at home I think. Suggestions most welcome and how to get her more into writing would be helpful too. I don't like pushing her but maybe I should.

At that age DS1 like Jiggy McCue series, Diary of a wimpy kid, and David Walliams books.

Ds (8) has over the past three months or so, started to read in bed before lights out. We've bought bedtime forward slightly. Before this time I would read to him or we'd read together but I've found he's started to devour books now. He's flying through all of the David Walliam books, loves Diary of a Wimpy kid.

Enid Blyton's 'Naughtiest Girl in the School' books are good. Lots of naughty behaviour and tricks, relatively short and easy to read.

We've had success with Asterix, How to Train Your Dragon, Tom Gates, David Walliams, Roald Dahl, and the Beano. We go to the library and encourage them to read books they like there, then take them home if they've shown an interest.

Our two have very restricted screen time (TV and computer), so they're forced to find other things to do - the books are an easy thing to get into instead (we don't tell them they have to, just hope they'll come to it on their own - so far they have!).

My dd loves Goth Girl, Ottoline, Dairy of a Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates, Daisy and the Trouble With.., and any reference book on guinea pigs.

Tbh DS went through a reluctant phase at that age, I just bought him the Beano and a footie magazine for a while and then he got back into it. Nat Geo kids is good for that age too Smile

Forgot Fortunately the Milk. Both of mine loved this.

Skulduggery Pleasant was the series that hooked my son into reading. It has a strong female protagonist, lots of escapism, and isn't too 'young'.
