funded deferred entry - Glasgow City Council

My son is 4 and a November birthday and I am trying to understand the process for applying for a further year of funded nursery.

I have spoken to the teachers about my concerns about my son not being ready to go to school and his emotional and social immaturity. The teachers have sympathised and confirmed that he can defer but there would be no automatic funding. They seem to think that as he's bright that he will be fine. I am not so sure, I definitely do not think that he is emotionally ready and I don't want to risk it.

I am looking for advice on what to do next. GCC has told me to ask the nursery to submit the application but I know that without nursery support it will just be rejected.

We can't afford to fund the place ourselves but it seems really unfair that my son will be at a disadvantage to a child whose parents can fund it or who is 5 weeks younger.

Any advice?

This is not England, and we do have a choice :)

P1 Scotland is a lot more structured and academically focused than Year R in England, the two are not equivalent.

We are in Fife and have chosen to defer DS (October birthday). Many people don't even realise this choice is entirely the parents choice - no child is required to start P1 until the August entry date after their 5th birthday... Funding for the extra year at nursery can be denied of course.

We have been told outright that DS will not get any funding for next year (the extra nursery year), despite probable additional needs which are being assessed atm. We can self fund, so it didn't affect our decision but I think it's appalling that people are being heavily pressured into sending their DC to school a year earlier than they need to, because of this funding issue... I bet in the long term it doesn't even save much money as struggling, immature for age kids are likely to need more extra help/resources than if they'd been given an extra year to mature.

DS is at a private nursery, and there is no issue with him staying an extra year. If he'd been at a school based nursery and they'd denied him a place, we would have made our own arrangements - DC are not required to attend nursery at all! Again, I realise not everyone can make that choice - we feel very fortunate.

Sue Brilliant news so happy for you and your boy.

Are you in the GCC area? Do you mind pm me? I'd really like to ask you a couple of questions. I was hoping to catch the Head today but she was our so will need to see her tomorrow to get our application started.
