DS1 had some optional yr1 homework to learn a poem. Can anyone recommend a suitable (short!) poem for him to learn, or point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

@Nixz
Hate to inform you but your DP is a plagiarist. The last 3 lines are good old Spike. I had a bumper book of Spike Milligan as a child and that was my favourite, which is how I have ended up on this thread, googling the whole poem using the lines "one with a trumpet, one with a drum, one with a pancake stuck to his bum"
Sorry, but I hate people who claim credit for work that isn't theirs.

I remember buying “Poems for the Very Young” and “Poems for the Young”. My DDs loved poems before they went to school. I’ve passed these books to my nieces now but I do remember one poem that was a favourite:

Nobody loves me
Everybody hates me
I think I’ll go and eat worms
Long thin skinny ones
Big fat squishy ones
See how they wriggle and squirm
Bite their heads off!
Oooh they’re lovely!
Throw their tails away
Nobody knows how big I grows
On worms, three times a day.

I’ve seen versions of this as a song and it’s from the 19th century. I think it’s really about a bird..

If you hear a dinosaur
Knocking loudly at your door
Through the keyhole firmly say
Nobody is home today

If the doorbell starts to ring
Tell the beast no visiting
If you see there's more than one
Turn around and start to RUN!

I think the child in the op will be at university by now!
