How do you move schools?

Maybe I'm being a bit slow here, but I would like to know what the process is for moving primary schools.

My DD is due to start reception this September, we have filled in the application form, met the deadline and so on, and we are happy with the school she's likely to get into. BUT, we already know that there's likely to be a move in the pipeline after Xmas this year, so it's likely my DD is going to have to move schools after her first year. Far from ideal, and I'm already stressing about it.

What I want to know is: how do you apply for a year 1 place, when is the best time to apply, and do you need an address first if applying to a different Local Authority? We are looking at Bristol, which is a nightmare for oversubscribed schools, and to be honest, until I know which school she might get, I don't really want to commit to the move.

I don't want to rent a house before we buy and then find out she gets into a really grotty school. Is there any way of finding out first what her options might be? I think all applications have to go through to the LA, but what happens if we apply next summer? is that cutting it too fine?

Sorry, hugely complicated and doing all the wrong things the wrong way round - the joys of moving jobs.... If anyone has any knowledge, or has been in a similar situation, I'd love to hear. Thanks.

Speak to the LA but you need an address to then be allocated the nearest school with a place

Basically you have to move without a school place. It's hard when moving to an over subscribed area. Once you have a residential address in that LA you can make an in-year application. They will offer you whatever place is available, you can go on waiting lists for schools you prefer...

what bullseye said. Theres no way of knowing until you move if the school is oversubscribed as , even if there is a place when you call, by the time you sign a rental or complete, it may have gone. I am in the same position and worried as I have 3 to place. I don't mind home educating one for a while but three..................
