Bullying on the way home - school issue or not?

Just that really.

If a child is being physically bullied on the way home from school, is it a matter for the school to deal with or not?

Children are yr6 and just learning a bit of independence before going to secondary school.

Thanks.

Is it children from the same class/school doing the bullying? If it was a child in my class, I would certainly want to know.

capsium · 25/02/2015 16:57

I would say that it is. They might not be prepared to sanction the children involved for anything that happens outside of school but they certainly can be made aware of what is happening and should be able to offer some sort of support.

RainbowFlutterby · 25/02/2015 16:58

Yes it is same school - not same class though.

Should I email the school or can they just shrug it off as it's outside school?

Sorry x-post there. Thank you, I'll email them.

Absolutely a school issue.
I would deal with this immediately if it was brought to my attention.

capsium · 25/02/2015 17:01

I think all schools have to have a bullying policy with support in place. Have they published their's on the website. I don't think it matters, initially whether you email or speak to someone but if you would like their support you will have to inform them.

Ohmygrood · 25/02/2015 17:04

What exactly is happening.
If the same situation was applied to a group of adults would it be okay to shrug it off?

RainbowFlutterby · 25/02/2015 17:06

If it happened between two adults it would be assault.

Well there's your answer; school need to know what's going on. Hopefully they'll get the parents in.
Sounds awful for the poor child who is being bullied.

Ohmygrood · 25/02/2015 17:10

Plus if they're year 6 they're technically at the age of criminal responsibility.

RainbowFlutterby · 25/02/2015 17:18

That's why I thought it might be a police matter rather than school, but I'm probably over-reacting.

I would certainly talk to the school.

DustyGold · 25/02/2015 18:18

As others say talk to school; they will want to know.
Also poor representation of school to public if wearing school uniform...

If the children are in their school uniforms then wherever and whatever they do in public is a school issue. Whenever they are in school uniforms they are representing their school.

I've recently read a lot of different schools bullying policies, most have a section on after school bullying, have you read your school's policy?
