No boots allowed

Just wondering why DD's primary school do not allow them to wear boots at school?

This means either walking to school with her complaining that her feet are cold, or changing when we get there (impossible when I realise I have left school shoes at home...)

There is probably an obvious reason for this rule but I can't think what it is!

My school didn't allow boots either. Bloody stupid. I remember sitting with soggy socks all day and freezing cold feet. Send her in them, worst they'll do is make her put her PE pumps on if she keeps them in the school. They can't confiscate her shoes! I think it's to save the floorsHmm

scribblescrabble · 21/02/2015 21:10

we don't disallow them but the children do struggle to sit cross legged on the carpet in them and those bloody lelli kelly patent ones rub together and squeak like a bastard Grin

blibblibs · 21/02/2015 21:10

DD started a new school in January and I was most dissappointed to discover that they had to have indoor shoes at school after spending a small fortune on school boots.

The indoor shoes were actually slippers, and it just seemed so silly to me. It was to save the floors seemingly, but every other schools floors seem to cope. However we got a letter home before half term to say they were scrapping the idea as it was eating up too much time in the day and piles of shoes lying about are a trip hazzard.

I think it may piss off lots of other parents though as most children don't seem to have actual school shoes as they we're just walking in them changing them.

Girls school shoes really annoy me, because unless they are able to tie laces then they are going to end up with soggy feet. I would enquire with school as to why and would be even more annoyed if boys are allowed to wear boots as DS does.

PotteryLottery · 21/02/2015 21:12

Winter boots, not wellies.

I wear boots in this weather, so it seems cruel putting DD in shoes which wouldn't be warm enough for me.

Is it because sitting cross legged on carpet would be difficult (Y1)?

Our has a 'change into shoes indoors' rule.

I always thought it was because the school buildings were plenty warm enough inside and bits would be too hot. It never occurred to me to ask, because changing didn't seem a difficult thing.

What do you mean by boots?

elfonshelf · 21/02/2015 21:16

Boots weren't allowed at any of the 3 primaries DD has been at - seems pretty standard round here.

They can wear them to go to and from school and then change into normal school shoes, but while there is wellie storing space there isn't for other shoes.

inthename · 21/02/2015 21:19

I always assumed it was because there would always be someone who tried to send their dc in 'ugg' style boots?

RueDeWakening · 21/02/2015 21:26

Not allowed at DD's school either - these kickers are the best/most closed school shoes I've found for her so far.

MrsBungle · 21/02/2015 21:30

No ban on boots at dd's school and it doesn't appear to cause any problems. When I was at primary school in the '80's we had to wear plimsolls inside.

Verbena37 · 21/02/2015 21:44

Dd (13) had a condition which means she needs to have warm footwear but her school has a no boot rule numerous friends of dd have said their feet get cold....especially in slushy weather.

A simple boot style rule, no heels etc, would suffice.

Notcontent · 21/02/2015 21:51

My dd's school has that rule too. They are very strict about the uniform... I think the problem is that the uk is not usually quite as freezing in winter as mainland Europe so there is an expectation that children can just wear very light shoes. But sometimes it does get freezing and when it's been really cold/snowing we have just ignored the school.

There is nowhere for children to sit down to change their shoes or store them during the day.

Verbena37 · 21/02/2015 21:54

The reason cannot be the floors.....there isn't any difference between shoes being dirty and boots being dirty.

capsium · 21/02/2015 21:57

Some children may need to wear boots for the extra support they give feet and ankles. It is a shame they will stand out more, if the uniform is this strict.

cartoonsaveme · 21/02/2015 22:01

Our school allows boots - ankle boots or proper boots. They don't worry about such things. Loads wear them in winter as high percentage walk to school in all weathers. No idea why any school would not

Edenviolet · 21/02/2015 22:06

My dcs all wear boots in schools with no boots rules-physio wrote a letter telling them it was necessary and they have been fine about it

capsium · 21/02/2015 22:10

Would be nice if there was no need for special permission though Hedgehog...if the uniform rules were more inclusive in the first place.

Strictlyison · 21/02/2015 22:12

Our school does not allow boots either, it hasn't stopped a new trend to send girls to school with lace up patent Doc martens. Glad the rules were clear. It looked awful.

climbing · 21/02/2015 22:15

Because boots are outdoor shoes and school is indoors.

In the winter kids should take shoes to change into.

cartoonsaveme · 21/02/2015 22:17

So if adults wear boots to work should they change too ?!?!

Heifer · 21/02/2015 22:17

No boots allowed in DDs school either, in fact she has to wear black shoes, no ballet style shoes, no patent shoes or flashing lights. She has occasionally worn snowboots to school and then changed when she gots there, but most days, tights and normal clarkes shoes are absolutely fine.
