Any experience of in year admissions at Wimbledon High School or Sutton High

My 2 DDs (year 1 and year 3) both attend our local state primary. Our financial position has changed and we are now in a position to privately educate them both. If we were completely happy with their existing school we would leave them where they are until secondary but there are various things that make us think DD1 would do much better in an independent school with smaller classes and I would want to move DD2 as well so they would be at the same school.

Does anyone have any experience of in year admissions at WHS. I have put them on the waiting list but the school is at capacity and if a place comes available they will be invited for an assessment. I have no idea how long we will have to wait or what the competition would be if we get invited to assessment as I imagine we would be up against a number of girls on the list. DD2 would be able to sit the 7 plus in a year's time.

I am also worried that they won't pass an assessment, they are both doing well at school but I am not sure how they would compare to girls who have been in private education since reception, I have no idea where to start with tutoring for this. My feeling is they would be more likely to get into Sutton but this is much less convenient.

I am feeling we have missed the boat a bit on private education is it really this hard to move them in year? Kids move in and out of their existing school all the time but is it different in the independent sector, it there much less turnover?

Any words of advice would be appreciated.

I don't think you've missed the boat at all. But you may have to set your sights on a less competitive prep for now. Any reason why Wimbledon high in particular? Plenty of other decent preps in the area.

Titchy thanks for your response - it is the closest to where we live and would be the easiest to get to and from.

I work and so need to be able to incorporate the school run into my working day.

When I say our financial situation changed, specifically a provision has been made for the girl's education by a relative who passed away. I still therefore need to work but school fees are covered.

I have looked into lots of the other schools (The Study, Ursuline Prep, Sutton High, Surbiton High) and the school run would be tricky to incorporate with a commute to work although I could probably make it work if it was the right school.

I also would really like them to go to a local school. I went to a private day school in London but it was a significant bus journey from my home and as a result all my friends were scattered around and i had a long day travelling to and from school. I would love my DDs to be able to walk to school and have local friends.

Like titchy I think you may need to look beyond WHS. The 7+ is quite competitive and your DD will be up against girls who have been working towards it for some time.

I'd take a look at The Study if I were you. They often have occasional places and it would give your girls a chance to get ready for the 11+ in a few years time.

Thanks mertonmama, I think I am coming to that conclusion myself and we are going to look at it. I think you are probably right.
