Maths tuition for dd1? Or am I being a pushy parent?

Dd1 has been flagged up as being gifted in maths and English. She is one of 2 children in her year ( small intake, small school ) to be sitting level 6 maths for her SAT's. She is struggling with the homework and prep for the SAT's as the teacher is not covering the work in the class ( as its only 2 children needing to learn it ), this causes a bit of a meltdown when she goes to do homework and she doesn't know how to do what is being asked of her. My maths isn't great so I'm having to rely on the Internet to find out what is being asked of her and then go through it with her so she understands ( she's fine once she knows what to do ). I'm a bit annoyed that they are expecting her to do work that has not been covered in class.

I know the SAT's are not that important and tbh up until know I was against them but these results will go towards deciding what set she is in at high school and I feel if she gets a level 6 it will improve her confidence. Dd1 has Aspergers and she's no good at sport ( unlike her friends ) so maths and English are her thing.

Should I be seeking extra help in the way of a tutor to help her with some of the work that has not been covered in class, or do I go and speak to her teacher and encourage him to help her?

Well yes, if the school that are supposed to be able to provide provision and are failing, either go back and cause fuss or pay for tutor, but either way she needs help.

The school should be teaching her the stuff she needs to do the test at school - no way should you have to pay for a tutor. If she gets a good level 5 that should put her in a decent set at secondary (although a lot do re-test at the start of the year). they will go over all the work during Y7 to make sure everyone is at the same level.
I would go and complain to the school - it is totally unreasonable to set homework on things not taught at school.

Thank you, we have parents evening in a couple of weeks so I will talk to her teacher.

I won't give too much info as I don't want to out myself or the school but the teacher has a lot on his plate at the moment and has been asked to step up into another role ( hope that makes sense ), before this they were giving dd more support but now they are too busy and dd is being let down.

Dd isn't bothered about not getting the level 6 in maths, she's more concerned about english ( though apparently it's harder to get a level 6 in this?). I just feel that if they want her to sit the level 6 paper then they should be helping her to understand what will be expected of her, if they can't do this then they should stick to the level 5.

I'm doing my best to try and help her at home but I only achieved a C in GCSE and it was a long time ago.
