Am getting all different timings of when I should apply for my DS to start primary school.

He was born November 2013.

When should I apply? & when does he start full time school?

Thanks Grin

My DS was born in 2010 and will be starting primary school after the summer. Our applications had to be in last Friday. That's just for our local comp and I'm in Scotland, don't know if it's different in England or for private etc schools.

My youngest was born November 2012 and she will go to preschool in Sept 2016 and start primary 1 Sept 2017.

Where I live its different to england. So the above would translate to Reception 2016 and Year1 2017.

So you need to add a year onto those. You apply for the school in the January of that year. So I will apply Jan 2016 for september start.

Hope thats not just more confusing.

Starts September 2018, need to apply between September 2017 and January 2018. You have a while yet Grin

(Assuming state of course.)

If you're in England your child would start primary school (reception) in September 2018 and the deadline for applying is January 2018. Usually you apply on-line and applications for this year group would start in September 2017. This is for state schools and you apply through your LEA (council).

Assuming you are in England and looking to apply to state primary, he will be in the intake that starts primary school in September 2018, just before his 5th birthday.

This means you need to apply towards the end of 2017/early 2018; the deadline will be around 15 January 2018 assuming nothing changes between then and now. There is no advantage in applying early.

If you are not in England, things may be different.

I have one of them.

I will be applying for school (in England) during the window which is September 2017 to January 2018, so he can start in September 2018.

He will start preschool age 2 in November 2015, moving up to the 3+ class in January 2017 where he will spend five funded terms.

Hoppinggreen · 28/01/2015 12:44

I did it after my DC turned 3 but applying earlier doesn't give an advantage it just meant I wouldn't forget!!

LIZS · 28/01/2015 12:45

He'd start sept 2018 so in England you apply early January 2018. Other areas and private schools would differ

prh47bridge · 28/01/2015 14:35

Just to confirm what others have said, he will be eligible to start school in September 2018 although you can defer entry until January 2019 if you wish. Regardless of when you want him to start the closing date for applications will be 15th January 2018. The earliest date for applications varies from council to council but is usually in September or October the previous year. This all assumes that you are in England and that nothing changes between now and your son starting school.

Some people may tell you that you need to get your son's name down for your preferred school early. You can safely ignore them. For state schools it makes no difference. If you want your son to go to an independent (i.e. fee paying) school the rules will be different and you may need to get your son's name down as soon as possible.

You are all so knowledgeable! Thank you :)

Bear in mind that if you are after a church school, it would be as well to check the current admission criteria online. Some have strict church attendance criteria /baptism requirements. Smile
