I really want to get dd into reading more, but am struggling to find anything that really inspires her so that she wants to keep reading after she has read a couple of pages. Thanks for your ideas.

It really depends on the dd (I know I'm stating the bleedin' obvious).

However, a few suggestions from my three daughters:

Rainbow Magic (your dd may have already passed this stage... if so, consider yourself fortunate)
Jaqueline Wilson (just check the books are appropriate)
Enid Blyton
Jeremy Strong

well mine are fairly reluctant readers but good readers.

the 7 year old does however like reading Maisie Hitchins by Holly Webb, Zoes Rescue Zoo books (got a set on the book people), Lots of other Holly Webb ones, The Worst Witch books and My Naughty Little Sister. oh and Rescue Princesses which were also a set from the book people.

if still Rainbow Magic level then you could try the Secret Mermaid ones because they are a similar level but bit of a change.

Loads of Roald Dahl. I absolutely loathed the Rainbow Magic ones so didn't encourage too many of those!

Opopanax · 19/01/2015 15:47

Definitely Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton. DD just turned 8 and has been devouring Malory Towers. Also Noel Streatfeild, the Pip Street series (Jo Simmons), Mariella Mysteries (Kate Pankhurst), all the Wimpy Kid and Tom Gates books, Michael Morpurgo (Mudpuddle Farm was a great hit), Helen Cresswell, the Carbonel books (Barbara Sleigh), and Sally Gardner.

Rescue Princess
Secret Kingdom
I would get these from the library or as cheap as you can, they are good for the odd bedtime reading, I limited the input as I personally see them as literacy junk food.

Holly Webb

Animal Ark series

Pony club books or any other pony/horse series

Usborne Young readers series 3

Astrid Lindgren

Cornelia Funke - Emma and the blue Genie or Igraine the Brave

The Worst Witch

DD is history mad so we also have lots of historic factual books at home and on loan from the library.

A book called Helping Hands by Caroline Plaisted. It is about the Brownies, and I think there are more in the series.

stealthsquiggle · 19/01/2015 16:24

DD is currently into Judy Moody, and my old Noël Streatfield books.

The Brownies one sounds like a perfect fit for her too - I think I will get it and stockpile it until next time she deserves a treat..

TheRealMaryMillington · 19/01/2015 16:30

Came on to say Goth Girl and Ottoline

DD also likes Wimpy Kid/Tom Gates

(be selective with the Jaqueline Wilsons, some are a bit upsetting e.g. My sister Jodie)

Neil Gaiman, Fortunately the Milk - big hit

flora and ulysses book

Opopanax · 19/01/2015 16:42

YY to Goth Girl and Ottoline. DD loved those. There are some we haven't encountered here, too, so I'm taking notes!

Jux · 19/01/2015 16:46

Cressida Cowell - all the dragon books. They're great! DD loved them then and still does.

She also loved the Lady Grace Mysteries by Camilla Cavendish. They are a little 'older' so it'll depend upon what your dd is like. Definitely worth ear-marking for later, if not now though.
