Sandwell maths assessment - help!

DD age 7 in year 3 has struggled to my mind with maths since reception. She seems average in everything else and a complete bookworm. Maybe this is why it seems she has been "lost" in maths. Her new teacher this year has listened and agrees that there is gaps in her knowledge. She had put her down for the every child counts programme. I asked how the assessment went and she said she got a 2c in the Sandwell assessment. But also said we can't compare that to the old NC levels as they font count anymore! Thoroughly confused now.... As when she got her year 2 sats she was average or a 2b, which at the time I found it hard to believe! I don't have clue how all this works but her year 1 and 2 teachers were pretty poor (not just my view). Could they have 'fiddled' the sats or encouraged correct questions as I know it's not a strict sit down exam. Silly I know but how can two things be so different in over a year!? Just glad they are listening now......so my question is, is 2c very low? Shock Smile

We use Sandwell testing as part of our benchmarking and children who achieved 2b in Y2 SATs often come out with a lower score on it. I think this is because Sandwell is primarily testing number whereas SATs are assessing the whole of the maths curriculum.
I wouldn't worry too much about the level - the fact that her new teacher has assessed her and identified weaker areas should mean that the school will plan work that enables her to make progress.
We use Sandwell before programmes called Success@Number and First Class@Number, both of which have had impressive short and long term results.

Every Child Counts is a great intervention. Doing the Sandwell assessment at the beginning and end is part of it. The level isn't so important - it's the identification of any gaps in her understanding and then what is done to help plug those gaps that's important.

Thank you that's really helpful and hopefully the school will fill in the gaps!
