Haven't had any.

DD1's school appears to take a fairly laid-back view of homework.

LIZS · 11/10/2006 13:53

We've had all those on your 2nd list, about 10 a week, will probably get the others today ! Think it comes from Jolly Grammar - next stage of Jolly Phonics.

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 13:54

Ahhhhh! So children up and down the country are getting exactly the same ones! How amusing!!

AlienEars · 11/10/2006 13:54

We've only just had the very first ones:

we
look
like
and

Small beer compared to thinking and chicken!

WigWamBam · 11/10/2006 13:57

Dd has a list of 30

I, up, look, we, like, and, on, at, for, he, is, said, go, you, are, this, going, they, away, play, a, am, cat, to, come, see, say, from, day, to.

There will be another list of 30 after half-term.

moljam · 11/10/2006 14:00

my dd is 6 year 2 and didnt have spellings in year 1.now she only has 5 a week, things like,he,said,go,they, going.not as hard as i thought theyd be.but she then has to write 5 sentences using these words before spelling test.

Froglette · 11/10/2006 14:58

That looks like a strange list to me, shampoo?

My son has 5 spellings a week to learn, he's a young 5 and in year one.

First week included "I" and "a" others were

mum, dad, cat, I, a
god, he, me, no, go
big, in , is, it, to
at, can, day, am, all

I don't tend to sit down with him and do them but get him to spell them in the bath using those bath letters.

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 14:59

Hmm, but shampoo is actually an easy word to do if they've done phonics.

So far, ds hasn't had to 'learn' any of them - he has just worked it out. Oh, apart from chicken - he wrote chicen the first time so he had to 'learn' about the 'ck' in it. All the others he has been able to do.

No spelling, though when I was in school the other day listening to readers the teacher was handing out a "Look, cover, write, check" sheet for spelling the numbers from zero to ten.

The Jolly Grammar approach seems very sensible, as they are learning some tricky words each week, as well as how to listen for the common spelling patterns in words eg shampoo. But they don't do Jolly Grammar at the DSs' school.

beckybraAAARGHstraps · 11/10/2006 16:24

Ah! You must be a week or so ahead of us GDG. We got length and lung this week!

Bozza · 11/10/2006 16:27

We are not getting them until after half term. I will be on the look out for chicken and shampoo.

beckybraAAARGHstraps · 11/10/2006 16:28

Ds has to write sentences with some of the words. This week he wrote "I am glad I have strong lungs" (glad, strong, lung)

Gobbledispook · 11/10/2006 19:19

lol becky! that's so funny they are doing the same ones!

have fun next week with 'squirrel' and 'squid'!!!

dd1 and dd2 (year 2 and year 1) have never had any spellings to learn in any of the 3 schools they've attended this year. All "good" schools with beacon status etc. We seem to land in the schools which aren't very into spelling or lots of homework, luckily for us.

my dds have crazy spelling but I like to think of it as enhancing their creativity.

charliebat · 12/10/2006 10:14

DD2 has got to learn to spell all the reception key words.

badkarma · 12/10/2006 10:15

Dd is in yr1 and isn't 5 yet. Her school seem to be fairly laid back, she came home with a box yesterday with a few words in it,

I, run, can, play, hop, as, am, at, it, is, im, a, are, skip.

And a magnetic board with the letters to make these words. I gather from the accompanying note that she will be learning them at home with me and not at school gulp

Loshad · 12/10/2006 11:03

We get 10 to learn every week - mostly just cvc atm, although each week has included one or two that are ccvc (super tricky thoses ones ) all on theme usually ie cot, box, shop, hop, top etc one week

motherinferior · 12/10/2006 11:49

Fennel, DD1's spelling is so fabulous I actively don't want her to learn how to spell properly. Wunz Rpon time der woz 2 monstres...

fennel · 12/10/2006 12:38

Exactly, MI.
recent "books" the dds have made include:

"A buk of Tomas"
"Wuss nokkin at my dur? Me seyd the sneyck. Me seyd the Munce". (etc).

I'll miss it when it goes.

fennel · 12/10/2006 12:39

Quite Chaucerian really.

Earlybird · 12/10/2006 12:52

Completely agree about loving dd's spellings. She is very interested in sending emails at the moment, and will spend a long time hunting/pecking letters on the keyboard. Here's an excerpt from her most recent:

my tetechrs name from scool is polly and shes very nis and prity and she das not shawt

Love it!

Blu · 12/10/2006 19:09

DS does not seem to have spellings as homework - but he has just started his Christmas list with 'cudli dolfin'.

QueenPeaHead · 12/10/2006 19:11

ds1s list this week included "pumpkin"

a little early, I thought

EnidVorhees · 12/10/2006 19:12

mine have never had spellings

they get a reading book every night
