Using marker pens in after school care club

Dd has been coming home from school with marker pen stains on her blouse. Her friend got a huge mark on her summer dress that hasn't come out. I managed to bleach dd's blouses and spoke to the teacher who told me they have to use them on whiteboards as part of the curriculum but they would try and supervise them better.

Tonight I picked her up from after school care where she had been using marker pens. She has it all down her expensive only available from the official supplier jumper. Immediately I got home I treated it with stain remover, then washed it.

It has not come out, I am livid.

I can't withdraw her from care club (I have to work) I have spoken to dd many times and asked her to be more careful and even not to use them but she is only just 5 and forgets.

The only think I can think of is to tell the care club staff she is not allowed to use them at all. Do you think they will think I am being arsy? They were apologetic when I pointed it out to them tonight but they do have a lot of children to supervise. They talked about asking the head if they can have aprons, I am willing to buy dd an apron, but can not get to the shop until Thursday and she is in care club tomorrow.

I really can't afford to keep buying her jumpers every few weeks, she has only had this one for a month.

Surely someone is in charge at the care club - speak to them maybe

Send in one of DH old shirts for her to wear backwards over her jumper and uniform

It probably is from other children too

RTKangaMummy · 10/10/2006 23:43

Why are they not using washable ones ????????

lucy5 · 10/10/2006 23:46

This drives me up the wall, my dd has black marker pen stains all over her school dress and I can't get them out. Someone recommended soaking in milk but it didn't work for me. It's her summer dress so I am not buying another one.

what are the child:adult ratios at the care club? - as far as i know from the woman who runs our after school club they still have observe standard limits (8 children, 1 adult) as they shouldn't be doing things at 5 imo that they can't supervise. I'd send her in her jumper anyway (and do you have a s/hand school shop? - ours is fab for such things)

they shouldn't really be using permanent marker pens at that age. speak to the leader sure she'll understand

julienetmum · 11/10/2006 14:10

Interesting about the ratios. I'm not sure what they are and the club is pretty flexible, if a parent is late collecting their child they automatically go into the club though we are supposed to book in advance.

How can they insist on 1:8 ratios when ballet club is 1:15 and the class is 2:20 (inc the TA). What makes after school care any different from ballet or gym or craft club?

The pens are not permanent marker pens as such, they are whiteboard marker pens, though the ones I looked at last night said "warning, ink may stain"

I sent dd in with a note today asking her class teacher to send her to care club with her painting apron until I can go tomorrow to buy a new one and that she is not allowed to use marker pens unless she wears it.

There is a school swop shop but the last two times I have been they have not had any jumpers in a smaller size, dd wears size 26 and it is big on her, I had hoped for it tp last 12-24 months then to pass it onto ds. The smallest size they had in swop shop was 32.

She has gone to school in the jumper today, she had to, it was the only one she had.

I don't know about the ratios either, as you say the after school sports type clubs seem to have more flexible ratios, as do schools in general, but I think it's because after school clubs come under the childcare bit of ofsted, which takes them back to a 1:8 ratio. I'll ask the lady who owns the business which tuns our schools afterschool club and ask her, but i'm not likely to see her until sun.

I send DS in his marker pen spoilt clothes. I cannot afford not to. He had two new sweatshirts that I bought for this term (he is Y1) but when they are dirty (and he is a filthy child) he has to revert to the old (ie from last Easter) one. I am not doing a dark wash every night.

julienetmum, apparently (according to my source - their company run after school clubs for several schools) - all after school care clubs (as opposed to hobby/sport ones) are subject to ofsted, and therefore the 1:8 ratio - applies to state and independent schools alike. hope thats useful/of interest.

they weren't totally irrelevant in this case though cat64, the op merntioned that it was hard for her daughter to be properly supervised as there were lots of children. Agree all the pens should be washable whatever the circs.
