gawd you need someone like enid or cod or MI but I also think

unpleasanter and unpleasantest/most unpleasant are ok

more musical and the most musical

hairymclary · 10/10/2006 20:17

unpleasanter isn't a word

foxinsocks · 10/10/2006 20:18

seem to remember some vague rule about having 3 syllables needs to have more and the most but having 'un' tagged on the front can mean a different rule

I'm out of my depth but posting just to bump it really

ElleMacpherson · 10/10/2006 20:19

thanks foxy, I guess those last two are more and most unless some says otherwise!

a general rule of thumb is that if the adjective has 3 or more syllables, use 'more' and 'most' rather than -er and -est to make comparatives and superlatives.

foxinsocks · 10/10/2006 20:20

yes, I would always use more and the most once it's over 2 syllables (so that would include natural, musical, delightful, terrible and unpleasant)

ElleMacpherson · 10/10/2006 20:22

ok, that makes sense. Thank you
