Honestly, I don't even know

I'm not sure what is covered in assemblies. I think they cover the Christmas story but I'm not really sure about anything else.

She came home the other day and told me God made the world and everything on it . I tell her to listen and do what her teachers say but then I tell her they are telling her rubbish. I do not want to withdraw her from assemblies but I am starting to think I might have to. I'm off to speak to the Head soon and so posted this just to see if her school is the 'norm' in this.

Surley they should not be teaching / preaching creativism (or what ever it is called) in modern times

why dont' you explain to her that different people believe different things ... let her know about different faiths and then when she ASKS what you believe tell her .. but allow her to make up her own mind

I think its extremely dangerous telling a child that its RUBBISH becaues its about respecting other peoples' belief systems

and I'm an atheist too

albatros · 04/10/2006 14:23

I went to a catholic primary school and had no concept that other beliefs / non belivers existed and got a big shock when I went to secondary. I have also found out that a guest vicar goes to the school and holds assemblies once a term, it wouldn't be so bad if other faith leaders also did the same. The school has not told me about this and I am not happy

I do explain about different belifs and don't really just say it is all rubbish I'm just being lazy typing. However when teachers she respects and trusts keep telling her God is real and I tell her it is a fairy tale that some people believe is true she is left very confussed

I think I might have over trained DS1 (9).

He is the one normally sitting at the back of the RE class (or whatever they call it now) repeating 'SOME people believe' after ever statement his teacher comes out with.

We've had an awful lot about Jesus from DS. How he "really existed", how He was the best person ever, how He did miracles, etc. The kids both know several religious hymns (we never go to Church). It really disturbs us, sometimes. That said, I've used it as an opportunity to explain all the other types of things that people believe, and why me + DH are humanists, instead. I think DS is more open-minded and skeptical, nowadays.
