Dd's home work is too easy....

And before anyone says "speak to the teacher" I will, when I can arrange for her and me to be in the same room at the same time...

Dd is in P1 (reception) and didn't have any homework at all for the first few weeks. Fairenough.

Two weeks ago, she brought home a word book- we were supposed to learn the first 10 words for her first assignment- she knew all 20. Then she brought home a reading book. The whole book contained the word "look" repeated 8 times. I know we were supposed to look at the pictures and discuss the story. We did that. Next assignment, the next 10 words- she knew them already, and the last 8 pages of the same book.

This week she has another reading book. It contains "look in here", "look here" and "look". All words she can read confidently. We have discussed the pictures and story.

Now, I don't know how to approach this without appearing to be a "pushy" mother. I expect that they are going at the pace of the whole class, but don't think that my dd is making much progress, really. We are reading books at bedtime, and she picks out the words that she knows, and she has learnt another couple, so I'm happy that she is capable enough.

Do you think I should ask for dd to have harder homework, so she doesn't lose interest, or will that just put everyone's backs up?

Homwowkr for a 5 yr old
Leave it, if she knows i all then instead take her to the library and choose some more suitbale books for her ability, or get some worksheets KS1 form WH Smiths etc
We had this with ds so I let him coast tbh, too young for extra resources
Do ask the teacher if dd is alright in class, if she is bored the teacher should notice...

Leave it for now. The teacher could be assessing all the class and the homework may become more ability-appropriate later.

Personally I hate homework for reception age children. DSs never had it.

I think HW should be easy. I set HW I know my class can do without any trouble. Some don;t have parents who can sit with them, others are so tired..its more the idea of practising things at home. It really is not supposed to be hard. I teach year 1 - all my class love getting hw - long may it stay that way and it will if they feel confident they can do it!I do push them in class though!

dd1 (in reception) no homework/ reading books yet - good! She is soo tired.

thanks, all of you-esp cazzybabs, nice to get it from a teacher's perspective! I'll leave it for now and ask how she's doing at the next parents evening.

I thought the point of reception was to try and get all children to a similar stage of learning within reason. When my DTDs were in a similar position I just left it as I felt that they were just doing to the job of bringing them to the same knowledge level.

If she needs more stimulation you could as others have suggested use the library.
