Handwriting help

My ds is in year 4 and his teacher recently suggested to me the possibility of him being tested for dyspraxia due to his handwriting.
He has no coordination issues, balance or any of the other symptoms associated with it.
He is top level for every subject aside from his handwriting. It has improved since year 3 but I would like to help him along.
Can anyone suggest any good methods aside from him writing out passages out of his books?

Have had the same with both my dd's, dd1 does have dyspraxia but dd2 doesn't. I think it's due to schools pushing for joined up writing when children are still mastering not joining, dd2's writing has been unreadable since the teacher told her she must join Sad. Does your ds show any other signs of dyspraxia?

No, no other signs, he can use a knife and fork, hardly ever stumbles, he isn't clumsy, he goes rock climbing etc

I admit his handwriting is not very neat but he is a late summer baby so one of the youngest in his year and he just about mastered normal writing before they moved on to cursive.

I'm going to get him some pencil grips and see if that makes a difference for him.

My DM always jokes about dd1's writing ' doctors are very intelligent and their writing is awful' ( which is true ). Dd1 does very well at school, her writing is readable but not as neat as some of her friends, she does have dyspraxia which is very obvious in the was she moves, she can't ride a bike and is a scatter brain Smile. If your ds has no other traits then I would say it's very unlikely he has it, looks like the school are just looking for a reason why his handwriting isn't the best.

Thank you for replying, I've just watched him writing and he holds the pen very awkwardly he never used to so I think I'll get him some of those pen grips.
He has no interest in riding a bike but like your dd he is very bright, oh well I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Both mine have awful handwriting, one is mildly dyspraxic. The primary school pressure on handwriting is a waste of time tbh. Their handwriting either evolves or it doesn't. This is my sincere experience.

Thanks for that link, I'm coming round to your way of thinking Riverland.
His dad has awful handwriting and mine isn't that neat.
