Interested hear from reception teachers or even parents on how much they covered so far?

dd2 failed get space any of 3schools shes on wait list for 4 so chose to home educate.

we do 10mins writing a day
least 10-15mins phonics

read 1 early reader mostly one without words but started on few level ones oxford reading tree and songbirds but started looking at other reading programmes for more variety ie usbourne phonics and bug club.

following jolly phonics programme

daughter knows all her individual sounds.we play i spy things beginning with sounds and she can gie several correct examples

trying work on her recognising letters

we play letter snap and have magnetic letters where we play around and make words

moved onto 2nd stage phonics

satp set 1

doing 2nd set after half term.

in addition to 1early reader we also read least one story book if not more.

numeracy been doing basic counting using manipulatives and counting books.

she can easily count 1-10 11-20 she makes mistakes.

we are keeping an eye on foundation national curriculum for maths

uk.ixl.com/math/reception

it seems quite basic and she can already do

shapes

count to 3
count to 5
count to 10.

she needs to do more work get to 20 which hoping crack next term

comparing
positions
size
money need work on,

she can easily classify so can do 5/10maths reception skills already.

we have toy till , sweet shop and play money

planned to do fun hands on maths with pouring and measuring

plan buy few extra manipulatives as been lusting after numicon at home kit.

we practice writing letters on wipe clean cards
she can write her own name
she gets confused upper case small case.

she has writing book where we practice each letter small and big the she draws few pictures of things that begin with that letter.

its not all work

she plays a lot
lots crafts
nature walks-no really started proper science yet as i experiments. all i can remember dd1 doing was mini beasts.

I had planned termly topics like space dinos but ammended it s

sept/october autumn an seasonal so lots nature walks collecting counting conkers/chestnuts.leaf painting, glueing leaves.halloween stufs so spooky stories halloween crafts, harvest

nov plan do poppy day-shes marching with rainbow group at church.
guy fallkes night.

december all things festive ie crafts incoperating xmas stries even counting xmas decorations. using thematic learning cover few areas.

pe we go park if weathers nice

she does cheer leading classs once a week

walks lots.

I know they only do hour week in school.

plan start trying recorder after half term

have baskets instruments where we do circle time and sing nursery ryhmes.

she loves baking

I only ask as freinds children in different schools seem to be doing different things an different stages.

most schools here were part time 4-6 weeek.

we have followed school term sometimes done more than thourght

other days done less.

we both quite tired we have lots breaks.

we do no more than hour sit down formal work day rest is upto her.

i try be structured and have lesson plans which actually list 4-8things want to do per day .

we have author of month and try do crafts based on stories.

I keep worrying we fall behind or are we about on track with average reception child at this stage in year.

shes oldest in age group 5sept birthday.

she cant read as such she starting sound out simple 3letter words
shes good at memorising stories.

Just to say op don't get too worried about where everyone else is especially in phonics- even within one reception class will be a huge range. Keep making the 'formal' learning time fun and all a game. Sounds like you are doing a great job Grin

Ok no definative answer than really

every schools ding different scheme
slightly different pace

just really wanted to guage where we are o schedule compared to others same age and in reception within schools.

sleepy sheep thats positive , eldest was slow r and year 1 finally year 3 shes really flourished and doing well year 4,

does seem to be some very bright kids on mumsnet.I would say mines average right now not sure where strengths lie hence why trying do lots find out.

will plod along with phonics and do reading eggs too.

Its was preferable me home ed than ump her in any school that had spaces.

we were very sensible with school preferences so fault squarly lies with county admissions i just doing best I can,

I know i cant repliacate the lovely gentle reception year and all lovely things some of things other kids do in reception but hopefully be able offer things that school cannot

more trips, teach her swim, outdoor iceskating mid week when quiet.

I realise im not a teacher but I am educated degree level
and following national curriculum as guide.

Emerald ice thanks im on that grup although not looked at in while. also on well trained mind.

main groups i made links with

local they lovely but all autonomous have made it know have 1 in school and only home educating because lack school place which makes me bit odd as its not really in keeping with their veiws and philosophy.

but the school mums think im mad happy so feel dont fit in at school either.

joined few national groups which was all rows he politics ad fighting las,
the best 2fb groups is structured one and new one home educating our reception children get loads advice and resources frm there but none live near me.

toddlers and childrens centre say shes still welcome at groups but she finds them bit young,

nursery school 3mornings breaks up week and she does forest school cookery there wears a uniform. They do extra extensin work with her and other girl also waiting for school place,

Its the not knowing when.

planned lesson plans a activities for term 2

shes legally defered until jan then im offifically home educatr or find a school with a space.

I am starting feel bit more confident hard stress we not doing enough as have school runs eldest and preschool runs with youngest.

had so many ideas we not done half of time seems to just fly by.

im sure next term when everyone else is less fixated with school it be better,

sepetember was hellish month walking past nearest infants we dident get kids in uniform, picking older sister up and trying avoid infant playground seeing all her preschool mates in their uniform,

ringing council who are useless no mvement on waitlists still no spaces at any nearby good schools.

im well aware we could miss entire rception and start year 1,

im being stubborn and playing the long game.

defered jan hoping buys me time.

Sorry mrz getting my letters and sounds and Jolly Phonics confused there. Anyway he's most of the way through the basic letter sounds and knows ones like ff and ck.

To a certain extent the pace is dictated by the children's rate of acquiring and being secure on the letter sounds but there is also a set pace in many Reception classrooms which would be very hard to replicate at home. Or maybe people with more compliant 4 yr olds would be able to....I know he wouldn't have learnt half as much at home with me this half term but then my DS is very good at learning and listening for his teacher but not so interested at home!

hiccupgirl · 26/10/2014 09:58

Just to add that it's not actually the council/local authority's fault if there is no movement on the waiting lists. They can't make a space in the schools you want if they are full. It's also really not their fault if the school's were oversubscribed. The only thing they could do is ask schools to take bulge classes as they are no longer able to open new schools, thanks to this current government.

I hope a school place comes up soon for your DD but that is reliant on other people moving their children to other schools.

louisejxxx · 26/10/2014 11:23

OP did you honestly think that all schools would be using the same phonics scheme and be at exactly the same place in all areas of the curriculum throughout the country? The thing to remember here is that teachers will be going along with what they feel their class is ready for, and will have to do things differently year on year too, say for example if one year there is a particularly advanced cohort and then the next year it may be an under average group.

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 26/10/2014 19:54

DD (March birthday) does Read, Write Inc at her school. I am very impressed. She is on stage 4 books and wrote a story last week. Her maths is also good (add/subtract/double), but I am in awe at how her English has progressed over 8 weeks. Her social skills are great and she has lots of friends from her own year group and some of the older classes.

I admire you for deciding to HE, OP. I couldn't do it (and I am a Y6 teacher)!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/10/2014 20:58

3As how long is your long game? Are you prepared for the fact that you may have to HE your DD and presumably her younger sibling through KS1 and into KS2 because there isn't a guarantee that a place is going to come up at all.

If you are happy to do that, it's fine, but if you are not I think you need to start thinking of a plan B. I don't think you have a lot of tie before she loses the school place that she does have.

duplofrenzy · 27/10/2014 16:06

I'm with 'Icklekid' - sounds like you are doing loads and doing a great job. Don't stress about it. Sounds a great range of stuff, mix of social and 1:1. Not every child in reception will do that much,I'm sure.

Have got my 4 year old at home ( reception age but summer born) and am doing far less and still think he is getting loads out of it. Ds1 fluent reader by autumn half term reception, ds2 nowhere near, sounds similar to your daughter but I am holding off as he isn't keen and think he will fly when he is.
