No.

My dc in year 6 have did comps on HG Wells,The Secret Garden,Jane Eyre,My Family and Other Animals,The Railway Children to name but a few over the course of last year for their 11+ prep. They weren't taxing. If they're good readers Jane Eyre should be fine.

Creatureofthenight · 24/10/2014 19:51

If it's just a comprehension exercise it doesn't mean they'll be reading the whole book.

Muskey · 24/10/2014 19:52

Thanks petit she is a good reader but has never tried reading any of the classics I guess it's time to start reading them

I loved Jane Eyre at that age, one of my year 5's is currently reading Pride and Prejudice and is enthralled!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 24/10/2014 19:52

Not as a comprehension exercise, no. The early sections are really easy to read and discuss. If she had to read the whole thing, maybe!

SeptemberBabies · 24/10/2014 19:53

My Year 5 daughter is reading The Boy With Striped Pyjamas as part of the WW2 topic. I find the adult content of it disturbing, I wouldn't have chosen it for her. But she's doing well with the book.

Muskey · 24/10/2014 20:00

The most adult thing she has read recently is the fault is in our stars. I wasn't particularly happy with that as I thought it a bit too grown up.

Ds studied Oliver and Macbeth as their yr6 texts last year - he really enjoyed them. ignores fact I did Macbeth for GCSE

wed99 · 24/10/2014 20:13

I think this may have something to do with SATS preparation. I think last years yr 6 comprehension paper used a classic text which tripped up a lot of children who were not used to the language and style of writing.

Muskey · 24/10/2014 20:15

Thank you all for your answers I thought it was just me obviously not. Are there any other sats traps I should look out for?

Sounds familiar from when I took 11+ entrance tests. ds is studying it for AS level but dd read it in year 7.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 25/10/2014 14:11

what are they studying as secondary school texts nowadays then out of curiosity? We did Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice in something like yr 8 (bit of a guess but definitely secondary school and I was at a selective private school so we were all good readers etc by yr6 we just were doing younger books although I can't remember what. I think the Wolves of Willoughby Chase was one and the Silver Sword possibly although that could have been Yr7. I just would have thought it was a bit like Roald Dahl stuff, you can read it to some degree when younger but to really get the most out of it you should wait until you are older but I am obviously out of date there.

Essexmum69 · 25/10/2014 18:10

Re secondary school, DD year 10, is currently studying To kill a mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 25/10/2014 18:55

oh so the same sort of things then - we did those in secondary too. Romeo and Juliet was GCSE for my year.

Essexmum69 · 25/10/2014 19:06

She is the last year of the current gcse's so I think things are due to change after her exams.

sickntiredtoo · 26/10/2014 17:44

I read Jane Eyre while I was off school with chicken pox at 9.I don't think I was particularly literate, so no I think Y6 is fine.

Muskey · 26/10/2014 17:52

As a result of all your replies I am re reading Jane eyre for the first time in a long while and dd has decided to read it as well. I am trying to look at it from a 11 year olds point of view. It really is a good book in the fact it deals with inequality and relationships. Dd has a few questions because she finds it a bit difficult to access because of the way it's written. One of the questions she asked was what was snuff. It did make me laugh as she had absolutely no idea what it was
