Yr 3 home work :(

It seems to have gotten so much harder since ds was yr 3. All a bit miserable about it (quietly so dd doesn't notice). We are doing multiplication with the grid method using X2, X3 and X4. She keeps writing the 3s in reverse :( Then writing sentences and she gets the sounds the wrong way around and forgets all punctuation. All a bit of a depressing....sorry I'm just venting really.

I suspect the trouble is that DD is suddenly having to switch from (probably) counting on her fingers when she gets a bit stuck to being able to recall Number bonds and tables as "facts".

DD had the reversing problem in year 1, but it was pretty much sorted by yr2. Are the teachers concerned?

Did she do SAT's? If they were okay, then it is probably just a case of helping her feel more confident with the basics. We have a 20 minute walk to/from school and DD is coping well with me asking her 10 table or spelling questions each way. 10 qns probably take up no more than 5 minutes, so she is free to go on and on about Minecraft/playdates/holiday plans. It's amazing how she has speeded up.

BTW: DD's (yr3) homework (aside from 20 minutes reading once a week) is typically taking 5 minutes (though colouring activities can take longer).

Thanks so much, that's a really helpful perspective and useful to hear how you're fitting activities into your daily routine! Dd did ok on Sats. Her writing is the main weakness. She has always had some trouble hearing the sounds in words and although her reading is now apparently 'average,' her writing and spelling is all over the place. It's not the sentences themselves, or her ideas, it's the mechanics of getting it on to the page correctly! Thanks again.
