Boring spelling homework

Every week my dd (year 1) gets range spellings to learn, she is a good speller and has a fairly strong understanding of phonics so learning to spell the words does not take her long. There is always an extension of using the words in a sentence which we both find extremely dull. One week was question words so we picked a Fairy tale character to ask questions, last week she incorporated all the words into a lovely story, this week I am at a loss and thinking I won't get her to do it.
Any fun ideas of what /how we could makes this activity a little more worthwhile...
Thanks

Nope! My advice would be to teach her to hit the targets for thus dull dull exercise as fast as possible and be done!
You don't get extra credit for making it exciting and taking ages I don't think.
We used to see how many of the words we could use in a single sentence at times !

I have two boys that are very into toilet humour atm Hmm

To make it fun for them the only thing I can think of is making the spelling words a bit naughty...such as house and because

'Fred went to Billy's house because he needed a poo' - would probably have my two in fits and keep them interested.

Aliterated sentences?
Poetry? Lots of different styles.
Stories using her friends names as the characters?

Much sympathy, been there, done that.
In the end I just stopped doing the sentences part. The teacher never mentioned it.

Im for the fun aspect too.

How about jokes...why didnt the skeleton go to the party? Because it had no body to go with

Or a kitten story
or a conversation
or a factual record (depending on subject)
or a scary medicine recipie etc etc

DD always turns her spelling words into a story. In fairness, her school always come up with a writing area to work on (using similes, using adverbs, using speech words other than "said" etc) which does mean there is something to focus on - perhaps you could try this yourself even if not prescribed to do so?

Pointlessfan · 13/10/2014 09:07

I'd be inclined to do it quickly then spend the time doing something she enjoys!

The last time my dd had homework like that, she wrote "my teacher wants me to write a sentence with x, y and z in it. Here you are".
That homework was never set again.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 13/10/2014 10:42

if she is doing them easily and gets them right then I would just do it fast and be done with it. we too used to go for trying to use as many of the words as possible in one sentence but that was more because DD2 was very lazy with writing and so wanted to write as few sentences as possible so she started it.

teeththief · 13/10/2014 10:49

Surely most children find homework 'boring'? It's just something that has to be done in our house whether they find it boring or not.

Just be grateful she is finding it easy and then move on

LoubyLou3:

We would play a game trying to get as many spelling words into one sentence as possible.

It let us play with meaning and I was evil and insisted that the word had to be used as given (so no making boisterous - boisterously).

DD2 really likes words and playing with different meanings.

The teacher was expecting 10 separate sentences - but never complained about using several words together and would give merit points if she used all 10 wordrs in one sentence (she only managed that twice).

I'd point out if she was using a word in the wrong way - but other than that let her play around. She used to happily work on it whilst I was making dinner - sometimes spending >30 minutes trying out various sentences that could use all the words.

Some learning is just plain ol' boring. I have always thought that homework isn't just about learning spellings or tables, whatever but about self discipline - get the boring tasks out of the way so you can move on the the fun stuff.

noramum · 13/10/2014 11:52

I wouldn't really put lots of extra work into it. DD learns her spellings by using an app called Squeebles. She loves it and plays it several times during the week.

Just do the words and the sentences and leave it like this.

Asleeponasunbeam · 13/10/2014 14:27

Just get her to do the best sentences she can! It's not boring then, surely. Instead of 'I can see a platypus', try 'Before gobbling his lunch, the platypus gazed wistfully at his estranged brother playing nonchalantly on the opposite bank' (or whatever theme takes her fancy!)
