Baking ideas for a Reception Class

Hi, I've been asked to go in and do bi-weekly baking with my little boys reception class. I'm there fro the morning, bu don't really get started to 9.30 and have to finish for about 11.45. In that time I bake whatever we've chosen 4 times with small groups of 6. My problem is finding recipes that work in this time frame! We only started last week, and we did fairy cakes which worked OK as they're quick and simple to make and quick to bake. I've been trying to come up with a list of ideas to keep us going through the rest of the term but am struggling. Any suggestions very welcome. Thanks Smile

Pizza is quick and easy. Scone base. Cheese and tomato.

Does it have to be cooking? My reception class has just made butterfly's on bread as a symmetry lesson.

Dd came home with a gingerbread man yesterday. Not sure whether they'd baked them as well as decorated them though. (Very difficult to work out what actually goes on when she's at school!)

If it doesn't have to be baking, you could try www.scientificamerican.com/article/scrumptious-science-making-ice-cream-in-a-bag/

Jam tarts could be quick and easy too

Pizza, savoury muffins, mini frittatas, vegetable samosas, biscuits, peppermint cremes, chocolate truffles, pies/pasties using ready made pastry.

Scones? Plain biscuits. I would also see if it has to be baking or ask if you could do decorating gingerbread men or anything like that as well. I agree jam tarts is a good one - I remember doing those when I was in primary! Cheese twists would be good too.

Cookies take 10 mins and they can roll them up into small balls which is fun for them.

I did this when mine were in reception. Chocolate cornflake cakes are good and quick. Fruit salad?

slippermaiden · 09/10/2014 21:40

Make a sandwich (and eat it!)

slippermaiden · 09/10/2014 21:41

Jam tarts with ready to roll pastry

cazzybabs · 09/10/2014 21:43

sandwiches

we did a 1 egg fairy cake recipe (where using balance scales like we have in school the children can weigh out flour, butter, sugar)

chocolate krispie cakes

scones - rubbing is great for fine motor skills too

CheeseEqualsHappiness · 09/10/2014 21:43

The I Can Cook book is fab

LittleMissGreen · 09/10/2014 22:33

I'm sure DS made bread, little cakes and biscuits and practised making a jam sandwich.

MadeinBelfast · 09/10/2014 22:44

If you don't actually want to use an oven top hats are easy and fifteens need no cooking (but lots of bashing up biscuits!)

Suttonmum1 · 09/10/2014 22:50

Can I suggest changing the recipes to measure in cups and spoonfuls as it's much easier with little ones.

How about each group making a different flavoured dip and then sharing them with veg/pitta.

Paulacarl · 10/10/2014 09:35

Thanks for all those ideas. Reckon that should definitely keep us going till Christmas!

sausage rolls - really easy and yummy. We tend to buy good quality sausages and then remove the skins. Either ready-made or home made pastry.
