What is the proportion of female to male teachers in your school?

Where I'm a governor, there is only one male class teacher out of 16 (including two job shares) and the Head is male. In a friend's school, the proportions are more like 50:50. I once raised this with the head who said fairly defensively that they simply appoint the best person for the job regardless of gender. However, given that I'm sure the other school does the same, I wonder what the difference is?

We are a small school and have no male teaching staff just visiting sports coach and music teachers. We also appoint the best person for the job regardless of gender. However, having appointed a male teacher in recent years it was remarkable how, for parents, male genitalia seemed to be the most prized and commented on of that teacher's 'capabilities' over the ability to teach!

We have four teachers, one is male and eight teaching assistants/1:1's, again one is male.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 05/10/2014 15:47

Primary school - 16 classes of children through the school. 2 actual male teachers, 3 males in management.

The other 2 will be management eventually and stop teaching, I imagine. The others all did. It's depressing.

Low. 3 male teachers in a two form entry school. But higher than any primary school I was in (and I was in 4).

Neena28 · 05/10/2014 16:14

Head is male and we have 5 other male teachers. About 12 female I think. In my opinion a good thing a good mix of teaching styles and specialisms too.

Neena28 · 05/10/2014 16:15

In that their specialisms are varied regards of gender

AmazonGrace · 05/10/2014 16:19

We have two male PE teachers who come into the school and one music teacher who I believe is male.

I wish we had more tbh. Having a Ds who has always responded positively to a male role model. I'm sure he'd love a male teacher.

There does seem to be a lack of male primary teachers in the area I live in. Even areas such as Beavers is lead by a female although I know further up in Scouts there are male leaders.

Our local school of about 10 classes (more teachers due to job shares) has no male teachers. I find that a bit odd and it does concern me.

BackforGood · 05/10/2014 18:01

Does happen that some men don't want to be the only man on the staff, so don't take their application forward when they find out they would be.

WhereAreMyGlasses · 05/10/2014 18:07

10 teachers 1 is male

The pe teacher and music teacher who come in are male but are obviosuly not there all the time

Thatssofunny · 05/10/2014 18:26

7 classes, three male teachers. We also have male sports coaches come in every once in a while, two male music teachers...don't feel as if we've got much of an issue in that respect.
Funnily, I've got two boys in my class, who don't respond at all well to males...especially supply ones. Confused Most of my boys are rather indifferent,...as are most of my girls.

Pico2 · 05/10/2014 20:20

BackforGood - I did wonder whether it is easy to break out of the "no men" cycle.

I spent some time in an all-female-staff infant school. I thought the atmosphere was pretty toxic. I'd hope that was just coincidence, but I'm not convinced.

MirandaWest · 05/10/2014 20:22

There's 8 classes at my DCs school and two male teachers. Head teacher female as well.

OutDamnSpot · 05/10/2014 20:27

There are 25 classes at my dc's primary and 12 male teachers, plus 2 male deputies. Head is female though.

Official line is lots of male teachers attracts others, and so high % is self perpetuating. Playground rumour is that Head likes to surround herself with young men - if this is true though must say don't think much of her taste in men Grin

Letthemtalk · 05/10/2014 20:29

Approx 17 classes, 1 male teacher, new this year.

VanillaHoney · 05/10/2014 20:32

Both DD1 & DD2 have gone through primary school without ever experiencing a male teacher. Not sure if there is a link but DD2 always wants to see a female GP and when she was little she would refuse to go to swimming lessons etc.. if the teacher was male. In the playground she usually plays football and cricket with the boys and doesn't mind males in social - and home environments.

Panzee · 05/10/2014 20:33

Small primary, no men at all!

Lordofmyflies · 05/10/2014 20:34

7 classes, three male teachers, three male T As.
They are amazing and generally the 'favourites' of the pupils.

enderwoman · 05/10/2014 20:35

Only men are the care taker and sports coach in our 2 form entry primary.

CatKisser · 05/10/2014 20:36

7 teachers, one of whom is male. Also a male Head who is a wanker resembling David Brent.
I've encountered truly brilliant male teachers and really shockingly arrogant, incompetent ones. Gender shouldn't come into it.

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2014 20:39

Every single member of school staff is female, in any capacity.

Itsfab · 05/10/2014 20:43

We have 7 female teachers and one male. There are two other male members of staff and one new staff member coming soon who might be a man. Tiny school. 6 classes, one class has two teachers job sharing.

rollonthesummer · 05/10/2014 20:45

My old school had no male teachers but at my current school, out of 21 teachers, there are 7 men, plus a male deputy.

hollie84 · 05/10/2014 20:47

16 teachers including head and deputy, 5 male but none in leadership roles.

Wait4nothing · 05/10/2014 20:47

About 20% male teachers. I think it shouldn't really matter.
