What is the average ORT level in your year 3 class?

I was just wondering as I have been to a parents evening and queried the level my dd was on, only to be told that no child in the class is on a higher level than 9, so book band purple. It seemed low to me, but I have not taught a year 3 class for a while so wanted to check with other teachers.

TIA

DD1 hasn't been taught any higher level reading skills at school yet humphreycobbler. she has just gone into yr2 and I think they are starting to do some now but we did them at home because I felt it was holding her back.

IME that does seem low. I'd expect to see a range from dark blue (v few) to purple (very few) with most on white/lime. Anyone on less that gold would be getting additional assistance - and our school is by no means exceptionally good at teaching reading.

I think expanding children's vocab through interesting and engaging books should happen at school too! What about the children that DON'T have parents who share books with them, buy endless books and research books that they might like? Should they just be stuck with the boring scheme books?

There is no excuse for poverty of ambition in a school. I do this at home, but they should be doing it at school too. Why ever shouldn't they?

Our scheme integrates lots of normal childrens books from ORT blue upwards - Roald Dahl, Winnie The Witch, Beast Quest, Top Gear, Michael Morpurgo's oeuvre etc. They are coded to an approximate level and go on the shelves with everything else. Non fiction too. Is that not the norm? Certainly it's doable.

Our school target is everyone leaving yr 2 on gold band.

The highest in year two is level 8 at the mo.

One of mine left reception on level 8, they do seem to hold them back. Its painfully difficult to get them to assess. They don't listen to readers and are not really on the ball for reading.

It SHOULD be the norm but sadly it isn't Sad
