My son has a reading age of about 7.5 I think, he is currently reading Oxford Reading stage 10 books (just been moved up to this level) and is getting on well with these but I can't help feeling that I'm not doing enough to help him at home, we always read his school book for about 20 minutes a day. He doesn't like reading alone, any ideas of how to encourage him?
I feel terrible that all his classmates have been free readers for years.

my ds reads well and is a free reader but hates reading to me and prefers me to read to him..the only way I can get him to read to me is to let him read a Star Wars comic, book or Minecraft Annual...have a go with something obsecure that your ds has an interest in

Have you tried horrid Henry or captain underpants books? My ds is 10 and dyslexic and they really got him going .there are lots of pics to break up the text do it doesn't seem quite so daunting . He also loves the Tom Gates books.any books with a bit of humour. We found the more he read the better his reading got and then suddenly stating enjoying reading hurray

Have you tried nonfiction as well as fiction? It was books about Space that got my nephew hooked on reading.

Another one who recommends Horrid Henry style books and NF texts. All depends what he is interested in, football annuals, comic books etc are always worth a try.

Diary of a wimpey kid, lots of pictures/humour etc or graphic novels, adventure time graphic novels are popular in our house

Try the TinTin books too....my DS loved them and it helped to bring him on.
