Breaking down longer words

DD is in Y1 and doesn't seem to want to break down unfamiliar and longish words like terrific or baboon even though they are decodable.

I understand that she is in the most capable group and on what I think is a turquoise band.

Any tips for getting her to break down longer words?

How's her comprehension? If she misses words which are crucial to the story, questioning might help ('What sort of animal was Barney?' 'A baboon') otherwise I would stop her when she skims over a word and split it together. DD used to just say non-words because she couldn't be bothered to split the word up properly. Having modelled it she now does stop and split.

I think the problem is, that up till now they have been praised for reading fluently, rather than sounding out every word, so now we need to teach them that stopping to sound out is fine with longer words.
