Changing for PE in Reception

My DS has his first PE today and I am a bit nervous as he did not master his skills as it comes to changing hos clothes. He can take trousers off as well put shorts and tshirt on but he can not yet unbutton his shirt and button it up either. Will the teacher help him? He tried to do it at home and got really frustrated. Any tips on how to help him?

Does he have to wear a shirt? The school my DCs go to let them wear polo shirts or buttoned up shirts. 99% of DSs reception class wear polo shirts as they can't manage shirt buttons yet.

Forgot to add, the teacher or one of the helpers (there are three in DSs class should help if asked. We got a topic outline home from school and the first term is all about fostering independence and learning to dress/manage school routines. My step mother is a reception teacher and my mother is a primary head and they get a few extra helpers in on PE day in the beginning.

It is a formal school and they are not allowed to wear a polo shirts unfortunately:(

The teachers always helped at ds's school but last year some if the smaller sized boys shirts @ M&S had Velcro top buttons if that helps.

Really hope they will give him a hand, thanks for calming me down a bit.

My Reception child has to wear a button-up. We did a lot of practising over the summer months. I gave him a jelly tot once he'd done a set number of buttons, the number increasing over time. I'm not above bribery . . .

My son had the fine motor skills, he just literally didn't understand what he needed to do. He cracked it once I painstakingly explained the movements he needed to make -- pull this bit of fabric so it's not in the way, push the very edge of the button through, etc.

At our parent information evening, the headteacher was pretty stern about expecting the children to button their own shirts. She did suggest that if they struggle, they could just undo the top two buttons and pull the shirt over their heads like a polo. But I think that would only work if the shirt was pretty baggy to start with.

Someone will help him and he won't be the only one. When I worked in a reception class we would start off with about 10 minutes of actual P.E. the rest off the time was allocated to changing. They soon get the hang of it, don't worry.
