Hi

Would love tutor recommendations for DS, yr5, particularly for Maths initially. Ideally a current teacher. Can any parents recommend their tutor as I am looking for someone experienced?

Thanks

I don't think is wise to pick a tutor recommended by somebody you don't know personally. I did that and ended up wasting money and time. Best ask qualified teachers you already know from your child's school or use well established tutoring companies employing tutors who will be matched with your child only after a couple of free-trial lessons and assessments. Charges over £30-£35/hour are a rip-off. We know a good Maths tutor but he is fully booked for another year and doesn't travel your way. Good luck.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem true to me. The sought-after "uber" tutors are more like 70/80.

In our area only parents of children preparing for GCSE and Oxbridge are paying more than £35/hour. I'm talking about tutors of primary school children here. Anyway, I won't hijack the thread now. Things might be different if you are in London.

htm123 - I agree and my strong preference would be personal recommendation. However, round here, no-one will admit to tutoring, but, of course, everyone does. I did get an excellent recommendation from someone on another forum for NVR and VR, but we do not need that at the moment and although a first rate tutor, was a little too distant. I know of one who is doing wonders for DS's friend, and although DS achieves very highly in Maths in standardised tests, he needs a confidence boost and therefore someone more nurturing.
