DS told by friends not to wear school uniform when going for his Grammar School Eligibility Test. No advise in the letter received from school about what the children should wear.

If this is Sutton, my DD will be wearing uniform because she will be going into school for the afternoon.

Last year, the SET was on a Saturday which made the decision easier! However the second round exams were on school days. DS was in mufti, as were the majority, but there were plenty of uniforms too (Id guess 70:30 mufti to uniform). I would go with what your dc is most comfortable in, though there is a train of thought that says that some children are more in "work mode" if they are in uniform (to the extent that some did wear uniform on a Saturday!)

Our Ds sat the kent test last year on a Saturday. Most children turned up in normal clothes. However, our Ds's school had told all the children to go in school uniform (prep school) as this would help put them in the right mind set for taking the exam.

In Essex, also a Saturday, in general, the state school children wear their own clothes and the prep school children wear uniform because the schools tell them they should. The official line is that they will work better in uniform but as the children are also encouraged to attend the open evenings in full uniform as well, the concensus amongst the staff is that it is free advertising for the prep schools.
The important thing is that your child is comfortable. Loose fitting clothes and a second top layer that can easily be taken off/put back as the temperature requires eg cardigan or zipped fleece NOT a jumper that has to be pulled off over the head as doing this whilst sitting at a desk covered in papers and pencils is asking for trouble!
If your school insists they go in uniform then please leave any hats at home, a poor child in my DDs year sat for 3 hours in a straw boater with elastic under her chin, there is no way that that helped her concentrate. Admittedly it didnt help my DD concentrate either as she kept wanting to sniggerHmm

My daughter sat grammar +11 last Saturday. Out of 400 kids, I saw 2 in school uniform. I think it is your choice. I'd choose comfortable.

Same here, DD sat test last Saturday in normal clothes. Saw a few DC wearing uniform (all indies as far as we could tell). Doubt they were feeling that comfortable as they stuck out like a sore thumb.

The 11+ tests here are held in the primary schools on a Friday so it's school as normal, test after break, back to lessons straight after!

Our Ds and the others from his school did stand out in their uniforms, however, they are proud of their school and so it didn't bother them at all. They were told not to wear their hats etc as this is a little excessive and would have been uncomfortable which I think is a sensible action from the school.

I agree ultimately it is whatever the children feel comfortable in for a few hours so they can concentrate properly.

We do the 11+ at school here (Bucks), so it's just a normal day Smile
