How much uniform do you provide?

New to all this as DS starts school this year.

It occurred to me I might not have purchased enough uniform - but it's not really the sort of thing you ask everyone else on the first day at the school gate!

I haven't bought a huge lot as I was kind of naively hoping that 2 thick jumpers would be ok, 4 shirts and 4 trousers, one PE kit.

I seem to do a wash most days so thought uniforms would just be included.

How about everyone else?

You'll soon find out. All DC are different, and it depends on so many other factors. If you find yourself up in the middle of the night waiting for washing to finish so that DS has something to wear the next day like me, then you probably need more. Until then, you're fine!

SBGA · 04/09/2014 23:22

I take your point about all DC being different; I had factored that in. He's a tidy creature unlike my second DC who is the muckiest little creature you could ever meet!

What you described is more than my DC have. We have 4 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and 2 sweatshirts and my DD has 2 pairs of culottes. We manage, the great thing about grey trousers is they don't show dirt!
At the moment my son is still wearing shorts and we do have to scrub his knees daily with a nail brush!
It depends how fussy you are!

MirandaWest · 05/09/2014 09:11

Mine have about 6 polo shirts each (packs of three), two pairs of shorts (DS - wears shorts all year round), two skirts (DD), a variety of summer dresses and about three (?) cardigans. DS has one school jumper. He kept losing them including a brand new one so I have been reluctant to get more. Could probably do with another one tbh. They're in years 6 and 4.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/09/2014 09:25

I have a full set for each day. I probably have 7 short sleeved shirts each as I bought a pack of 5 and pack of 2. Have 5 skirts/trousers each (have 1 boy, 1 girl). Havent bought jumpers yet as it hasnt been cold.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/09/2014 09:26

p.s. my 2 are in their third week back at school as we are in Scotland

OldBeanbagz · 05/09/2014 09:30

My 9 year old has 4 shirts, 2 pairs of trousers & 2 jumpers. I find that works for me as he's quite a tidy child.

He just has one set of PE kit and football kit which gets washed each time he's worn it.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/09/2014 09:33

it also depends on whether your child gets changed out of their uniform when they get home. Mine tend not to so each set lasts 1 day which is why I have a weeks worth.

MirandaWest · 05/09/2014 09:45

One lot of PE kit per child as well. Mine don't tend to get changed after school but aren't too messy generally.

Galena · 05/09/2014 09:45

Mine doesn't change after school either, so we put to wash every day. We only wash at weekends, so she has enough for every day. She's also given the choice of what to wear, so has 5 summer dresses, 5 trousers, 5 pinafore dresses and 5 cardis. We also have extra polo shirts so 5 can be in the ironing pile and 5 in the wardrobe Blush

OrangeTart · 05/09/2014 09:47

DS is now in year 4 he has always had 2 jumpers, 2 pairs of trousers, 5 polo shirts, 5 pairs socks, 5 sets of underwear.

DD in reception has 2 cardigans, 2 pinafores, 5 polo shirts, 5 pairs of socks, 3 pairs of tights.

This has always been plenty, if one set is dirty I can wash dry and iron it while they wear the other. No point buying a full set for each day when you can chuck it in the washing machine and it is clean in an hour.

HopefulHamster · 05/09/2014 09:51

We bought three pairs of trousers but the school asks for spares for reception and just having two at home won't be enough (eg if one in the wash and then spills breakfast on the other pair!) so I'm going to buy one or two more this morning. We already had five polo shirts, one decent sweatshirt and one slightly faded second-hand sweatshirt!

Cinnamon73 · 05/09/2014 09:58

DD has a complete set for every day: socks, pinafore, shirt, cardigan.

She spills some lunch every day and I just don't want to worry about uniform all week.
I bought all her pinafores in the uniform shop second hand for a £1 each, they look new.

ChunkyPickle · 05/09/2014 10:04

I've gone with 2 jumpers, 3 trousers, and 5 shirts - but I think I'll need another jumper really.

I'm trying to instill a routine of getting out of uniform the moment he gets in - but unfortunately we might have already been past the park and the shop by that point and so be filthy anyway - but I still think it's a good habit to be in, even if it means he wanders around nude all evening.

SBGA · 05/09/2014 10:06

I intended to get him out of his uniform each day simply because I remember I just didn't relax the same when in uniform. It was like a symbolic way to remove the school day!

My two have two jumpers, two pairs of trousers and 5 polo shirts each. They get changed when they get home, and in the event both pairs of trousers/jumpers get dirty before the end of the week, I bung a wash on in the evening and they're dry by morning anyway. Only one PE kit each.

Fuzzymum1 · 05/09/2014 10:21

We have three of everything except PE kit - he has one of those. When he was younger/messier he had a clean set each day, I would wash wednesday and at the weekend. Now he's older/cleaner he wears one set mon/tue one set wed/thu and one fri - if he gets messy on a monday or wednesday he gets a clean set the next day and hope he does't need more.

noramum · 05/09/2014 10:25

DD started reception with 3 sets of each, one PE kit only as it stays in school.

As I work I realised very fast that it wasn't enough. So I upgraded to a full set for each day.

She is now in Y3 and while her skirt survives the shirt and cardigan do not and need to be changed daily or at least every two days for the cardigan.

sleepyhead · 05/09/2014 11:01

I buy 2 polo shirts and 2 jumpers each year. Ds1 also wears the 2 which were new the previous year though if necessary (get a wee bit snug towards the end of the second year but I buy big).

2 pairs of school shorts (get 2 years out of them) and 4 pairs of trousers. Trousers or shorts are clean on every day but usually get a couple of days out of a jumper.

One gym kit.

addictedtosugar · 05/09/2014 11:24

3 jumpers, 6 trouser and 6 shirts (both came in packes of 2), 2 ties, one PE kit.
I work FT, and don't have a tumble drier. DS1 is a muck magnet.
We only had 4 pairs of shorts last term tho. I have bought more - 4 pairs of shorts between 2 kids wasn't going to work!

TeenAndTween · 05/09/2014 12:46

At primary my DDs only ever had

  • 2 polo shirts
  • 1 skirt & 1 pair trousers
  • 1 jumper & 1 cardigan
  • 2 summer dresses
& 1 PE kit.

Uniform changed out of straight after school, washed weekly. If badly dirty part way through then move to alternate item.

TeenAndTween · 05/09/2014 12:47

ps get dressed after breakfast in infants.

Hurr1cane · 05/09/2014 13:00

Mine has 3 jumpers (1 to wear, one in the wash and one spare in case he spills juice or something all over himself before school)

6 polo shirts, because they came in packs of 2 and I thought I might as well buy 6 because they end up getting ruined so 3 for now and 3 spare to replace the ruined ones.

And about 20 pairs of trousers, because I'm thinking of toilet training him when I get the replacement medication. But if they were pretty reliable on the toilet I would say 5 pairs of trousers, and send a spare into school just in case.

crazykat · 05/09/2014 13:08

My ds1 and dd2 are muck magnets so have 6 sets of bottoms (trousers/pinifore/skirts), dd1 has 4 sets as she isn't as bad. Dd1 and ds1 have two sets of pe kit because they came in packs of 2. Ds has 4 jumpers and the DDs have 2 cardis each as dd2 doesn't tend to wear them and dd1 doesn't get them mucky.

They all have 10 polo shirts each as they're the only whites we have and we have a big machine so a weeks worth don't even make half a load.

They also have 2 coats each which I've always done so they have a spare if it gets very wet or need washing.

I probably go overboard with uniform, especially tops, but there's 2 adults and 4 DCs so its easier to make sure there's enough clean uniform for each of them this way.

HemlockStarglimmer · 05/09/2014 13:41

One of everything and a spare shirt.

I'm sure when she reaches puberty and starts getting smelly then a clean shirt will be needed every day.

The uniform is pretty expensive but hard wearing and easy to spot clean if necessary.

Tonight I shall be laundering everything to by dry for Monday. No ironing required!
