Movin area, changing schools

We will soon be moving into a new area, mainly for â??quality of life related reasons. Although there are a few good state primaries, I was told there are practically no chances of DD getting into one of them, as she is in year 2 (apparently, it becomes easier in year 3).

My question is: if we move from place X to place Y and are offered a place in a school that is too far or that we don't like, can we refuse it and still keep our school in place X (even though it's something like 4 miles away)?

Yes - we're keeping DD at school in London rather than moving her to a pretty dreadful one in the new place. Has been rather advantageous not having to consider primary schools when house hunting and avoiding the premiums for certain catchments.
