Best place to buy school uniform

DD1 is starting reception in September. Lots of people have said M&S has the best quality school uniform but I've missed the sale and they are much more expensive than the supermarkets. My other choices are Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco.
Which would you recommend?

Sainsburys. We bought from all the supermarkets last year and Sainsburys washed better and wore better than Asda, Tesco and Aldi. The only downside is that you can't order online. Asda were probably second best.

Galena · 06/08/2014 18:31

We've actually just stocked up on stuff at Sainsburys for September for DD as she goes into y1. 6 polo shirts, 6 cardigans, 6 pairs trousers, 6 pinafore dresses and 1 more summer dress came to 68.50 altogether.

coppertop · 06/08/2014 18:36

I would go with Sainsburys as a first choice and then Asda.

pinkerson · 06/08/2014 18:44

I have always bought M&S. But actually dds prefer the Asda polo shirts and they are so much cheaper. Am going to Asda this year.

6 cardigans??????

Toohotforfishandchips · 06/08/2014 18:47

I have had them all and not sure there is much in it - I like M&S best for smartness but get Tesco t shirts as ours are gold and hard to get else where. I only ever have 2-3 cardigans and jumpers as these tend to last between washes - polo shirts do not and need clean one every day

AuntieStella · 06/08/2014 18:48

I've always had Asda and it's fine. There really isn't much difference between the supermarket brands.

I agree, sainsburys polo shirts are amazing and don't lose shape or colour

Has anyone found any coloured ones in there this year? My local sainsburys said they're only doing white ones but not sure if that's just the store or across the whole lot?
I'm after pale blue

They still have blue ones on their website so some of the shops must still be selling them:

www.sainsburys-live-well-for-less.co.uk/tu-clothing/products/children/3-pack-blue-unisex-polo-shirts/

Ours only has the colours of the local schools so it might be worth trying a branch in a different area if you have one.

Good question OP! (Scribbles notes).

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/08/2014 19:02

I'm sure I saw some blue ones in the Bicester sainsbury yesterday. And yellow

Depends what you are after really. Sainsbury is good. Asda is too.

I don't bother with m&s anymore as it's three times the price and lasts two wears before zips break or stitching comes undone or it looks shit.

The pinafores in sainsbury are really good

Recommend the asda flippy skirt as it washes and tumble dries and doesn't need ironing at all.

Shirts in sainsbury are pretty and nicely cut with little embroidery bows at the bottom.

MozzchopsThirty · 06/08/2014 19:03

Great thanks will try another local store

CinnamonPlums · 06/08/2014 19:04

Sainsburys definitely. They last really well, my two Dds have worn the dresses and I'm putting them away for dd3!

flossieflower · 06/08/2014 19:06

Sainsburys for polo shirts and cardigans, M&S for skirts/dresses and tights but always get at least one size bigger for tights as they shrink. Asda and Tesco seems to be crisp quality and only fits obese children!

Layl77 · 06/08/2014 19:06

Why would you need 6 of everything? My filthy Ds just about gets through 2 jumpers per week! :O

Layl77 · 06/08/2014 19:07

I wasn't v impressed with asda trousers, they lasted but look bobbly compared to m&s

flossieflower · 06/08/2014 19:07

Crap not crisp- auto correct fail!

Sainsburys polos/dresses seemed better than MandS last year (and a fraction of the price).

All 3 supermarkets green cardis seem to fade and look worn though. I didn't actually try MandS cardis - any better?

I like the look of the John lewis gingham dresses but to be honest we've had supermarket handmedowns that wore well and still look good!

Galena · 06/08/2014 19:11

I think ours had blue polos.

6 of everything because she's a grubby urchin who gets everything down her... we don't always change her cardi every day, but do most days - amd at £4 for 2, I don't mind getting them.

bigglesgoggles · 06/08/2014 19:16

M&S for skirts - got ones with adjustable waists and a size up so they've lasted us two school years! Hold pleats really well (didn't have to iron them every time!).
Sainsbury's for cardigans and polo shirts - also bought big and have lasted through Reception and Year 1.

VeraGrant · 07/08/2014 07:13

Our sainsburys does polo shirts in several different colours, including blue. Not bad at £3 for 3!

DuchessOfPodd · 08/08/2014 07:54

M&S is the only place I've found that does culottes for girls - genius, no need to worry going upside down on the playground climbing frame ! They do a nice pleated skirt with adjustable waistband which unlike many others doesn't have the ugly ruches at the back when you make it tighter, instead it's flat and looks a lot neater. Took all their pools back for a refund tho, even the next size down was too wide on my beanpole DD. I think I'll try JoJomamanBebé and vertbaudet online next as these sizes come up slimmer.

DuchessOfPodd · 08/08/2014 07:56

polos.

theidsalright · 08/08/2014 09:39

I couldn't get slim fit trousers in the supermarkets. Sainsbury trousers on my DC had that clown look! I've kitted mine out (incl shoes) in M and S this first time. Time will tell!
